The following is a recount of my shocking iPhone experience yesterday.
To begin, I picked up my iPhone 3G 2 weeks after it came out. I'm still on my originally purchased model, as it's flawless and doesn't have any issues. (except occasional software glitches, one of which your about to hear about)
To begin:
I full charged my iPhone Thursday night via USB. Once it began charging, I turned it off. (it continues to charge when off, but there is no indicator screen, most people don't know this)
Friday morning I wake up, and turn the phone on in it's cradle. This allows the phone to recognize it's been fully charged, and then reset the usage counter back to 0 minutes. (until taken out of my dock)
I talked for about 20 minutes, sent various text messages, and browsed a few sites throughout the work day on my phone. Usually, this type of usage was considered "very light" to me, as my phone's icon would remain fully charged at this point. (and has been for the past 7 months)
Then at about 6 PM I notice my battery icon start to go down a little just as I'm about to leave my office. I think nothing of it.
Next thing I know, it's 8:30 PM and I'm at dinner. My gf is starting to play a game on my phone when she gets the 20% battery warning. I tell her not to worry about it, and to continue using it.
10 PM comes around, and we're out and about at a bar, and then the 10% warning comes. Keep in mind from 6 PM on, I have barely used my phone at all. (2-3 txt msg's, a quick game of tetris, and nothing else)
I tell myself that something is up. I go to the usage page (general > settings > usage) and find that my phone has received 1.0 GB of data! (this was 400 MB or so before, I know this because I check it all the time)
Then of course, my phone dies, and I get the low battery screen. Next thing I know, my phone is back in consciousness, and it's 2AM. (It just magically turned on)
Long story short, I'm back at home now, and I began to let the phone charge back up via USB while in Ubuntu. (power only, no sync) I went to navigate to the usage page again, and I found that the Wifi icon/menu was completely greyed out. I've never seen this before, and I have attached a screenshot for you to see below.
I turned the phone off, then back on, and got the connect to iTunes screen. I then restarted my computer and booted into Windows, opened up iTunes, and did a sync. I received a "iPhone is activated" message on the phone, and now all is well. (Wifi works fine now)
Very long story/rant I know, but has anyone ever had an experience such as this? I'm a computer geek at heart so I'm always in iTunes, etc, but I can't imagine what a non-itunes user would face when owning an iPhone.
The bazaar thing is that I've checked my AT&T account online, and I've only used 58 MB this billing period according to them. I have "unlimted" data, but what was all that transfer? I don't care too much as I'm just happy it works now, but it still dumbfounds me.
Thoughts? Comments?
