Myself, about two weeks ago: "
I've read these all (and the other threads), and I'll chime in. I do a ton of reading and writing for work (historian, archival sources, occasionally handwritten), so a better screen and a BIGGER screen are just better.
I've been using a m1 11", and it's fantastic. But my workflow just works so much better with more real estate. At home I run a 16" M1 MBP connected to 2x32" 4k monitors, and occasionally a third 27" in portrait. My phone is a 14 Pro Max. I travel about a quarter of the year, and so have the iPad as a second monitor.
So I've been on the fence, gone to the Apple Store twice to play with the different sizes. I'm going to order a 13 and try it with my workflow for a few days. With the weight reduction, I think it'll be great in the hand, and definitely liking the extra 20% larger screen when used as a second monitor on the road. And if after a few days it's too unwieldy, I'll return it for an 11".
Also going to pick up a Pencil and see how well it works with the apps I cycle through, none of which are on demo at the Apple Store."
I've now been using my base 13" m4 for about 10 days, and now on a long work trip— multiple countries, plains, trains— with it. And I LOVE it. The screen is amazing, and having the extra real estate is really useful. I haven't found it awkward to use in my hands at all, though it took a little getting used to. I've decided to use it "naked" (my 11" lived in a case that added thickness and weight), but I never carry it ANYWHERE, even around the house, without sliding it into a padded sleeve.
Very happy with my choice.

Hi there! Thanks for sharing your experience with the 13" M4 iPad. I'm considering either the 11" or 13" M4 for similar reasons—mainly for reading and occasionally marking up vast amounts of history and philosophy papers and books.

Quick question: how are you managing without a case? Do you use a stand for propping it up, and how do you handle the sleep/wake function without a cover?

Great write up - I have the 13” base M4 as well as coming from the 11” M1. The only time I found myself preferring the 11” form factor was for reading eBooks, but the lighter weight of the 13” now makes that more comfortable with this generation. I actually picked up both the 11” and 13” M4 to try for a few days, and found that although the 11” size is easier to handle one-handed when reading in bed, I would often still prop up on my body or just use two-handed. Thus, I felt the significant improvements to usability in every other scenario with the larger screen far outweighed any advantage the 11” brought in terms of reading usability.

I agree that the 13” iPad + 16” MBP is a great combo. The iPad still isn’t there for me as a total Mac replacement, but for 80% of the daily tasks I do - I find myself reaching for the iPad over the MBP.

I bought a stand, a Satechi r1. I like this better than a foldable case and because it doesn’t add weight and it means I can put the iPad in portrait, which I prefer when it’s being used as a second monitor. As for sleep/wake, I just tap the screen.

Good to know! I indeed bought a Satechi r1 long time ago for my old iPad Air 2, but was unsure whether it would be stable enough for a 13" iPad.

A follow-up: My wife's been using my 11" m1 in the case. I picked it up today. So heavy! So thick! Such a small screen! I am really loving the choice I made for the 13".
