Coming from a 15" PB, I was expecting a bunch from this new laptop. The 17" MBP delivers it all.
First off, it runs just as hot as my PB, and the PB heat never bothered me, so no big deal.
Boots quick as hell, but its cool that it loads up the dock and startup apps just as quick. Pretty much, once you're in OS X, you can start using it, no waiting.
The sound of the speakers is great. Let me explain, it still sounds like poo (I never liked the way my PB speakers sounded), but they are definately louder, much easier to HEAR the dialogue in movies now.
The display, WOW! At half brightness, its as bright as my PB was at FULL brightness, its incredible. The higher res also is very helpful when it comes to multitasking. I wouldn't trade the extra screen real estate for the world.
No whine, none at all. Runs just as quite as my PB did, so it seems I have a "working" MBP, lol.
The screen latch is odd. It latches, but if I handle it improperly, the right side latch will unlatch itself. The left side latch stays latched. I usually don't lug my laptop around while its sleeping, but mine doesn't seem to knock itself out of sleep mode, just one of the latches gets undone (annoying). I will wait a few weeks before going to Apple for a repair, let them realize there is an issue first.
I also installed Bootcamp. Installed without issue, and I am running a couple of the only games I have (Flight Sim 2004 and Tiger Woods 05), but run super smooth at MAXIMUM graphical settings.

So far, I can't make a negative comment about the MBP (other than the latch). The magsafe is cool and a nice little feature that makes me appreciate Apple more and more. The extra USB port is helpful, glad they added it (I see Windows based laptops with 4 USB all the time, bought time us Apple people got more than 2).

BTW, is there a place on the 17" MBP that holds the Apple Remote (like a magnetic area or something?)? Just wondering.

17" MBP 2.16GHz 2GB Ram 120GB 5400RPM 256MB X1600 compared to
15" 1.67GHz G4 1.25GB Ram 80GB 5400RPM 64MB ATI 9700

Cool, I'm in the position of either getting this one, or waiting until merom. Really don't NEED it right now but I would love to have it and probably be a lot more productive.

What are you using it with?
Extra screen? Use it in clamsell mode? Wireless mouse/KB?

And lag playing games on a bigger screen?

thanks

I'm confused. Was this just to act as a placeholder? If so, why bother?

Sorry, I don't know what happened, apparently, I suck at the internet.

I should also make note that the MBP gets a good 30 minutes extra battery life when compared to the PB.
Brightness at half, Wireless on, BT off, Sound on and playing through the speakers at half (iTunes) - 3:50 on MBP and 3:20 on PB. I could never get over 4 hours on the PB, but if I turn the sound off and iTunes on the MBP, I can get 4 hours easily (more like 4:15). 4 hours of battery life on a laptop like this, thats more than I can ask for.

Glad to hear that everything has worked out for you. As far as the latch goes, does it unhook itself completely on one side? Is the screen loose? For example if you hold it flat and shake it left and right does the screen wobble back and forth when it's closed? Sorry, just trying to get a feel for the latch issue. I saw a store model in my local Apple store that seems to have had something wrong with the latch... :( At least it doesn't knock itself out of sleep as you mentioned. :) Keep us updated on how it goes!

No, the screen is not loose. Its flat when closed (and the gap between the lid and bottom is even). Its when I pick up the laptop and kind of press on the lid to grip it that the latch gets undone. As stated, only the right side latch. The only way to make the left side unlatch is to pry on the lid and forcefully open it. Its an issue that needs to be addressed. Not a huge deal to me since my MBP sits on a desk all day and is placed in a sleeve and case when transported, but still, its an issue.

Thanks for the fast response! :) I see now. It seems that I witnessed a different issue with the 17" MBP with which I was playing in the Apple Store. That one seems to be wobbly when the screen was closed. :( I'm glad to hear that it won't bother you too much though! Congrats on the new MBP!

Its cool, I love it. The screen doesn't bother me, but I will get it fixed, I don't want to wait and then forget about it.
Just noticed another thing also, seems that the SuperDrive is quieter than the one in my PB, burned a music CD and it wasn't loud at all when spinning (you could clearly hearing a "whirling" sound with the PB, nothing I never heard before, its just that MBP is surprisingly quieter).

FYI, I had the same latch issue on my 17" MBP - I phoned Apple about it the day after I received the MBP and they said they'd replace the MBP for me. My new one arrived last week and I'm so glad I did change it, the latch not working properly would have bugged the hell out of me, even though it is relatively trivial.

Thats good to know. Maybe I'll go to the Apple Store this week and see what they can do about it.
