Unfortunately iPhone 6 Plus is underpowered and iOS 9 performance improvements are nowhere to be found...
I'm on 9.1 beta so the calendar thing is not present...

In portrait mode try double-tapping a day, not just a single tap.
(Not sure if it's a bug or that's how it's supposed to work).
