I just purchased my Apple TV no more than 2 weeks ago. I was one of those that heard about the update coming soon and was very interested in movie rentals, but also have a 300+ movie collection.
Here is my take on Take 2. I love that you do not have to switch between different sources now. You can set up a sync source and a stream source and apple tv automatically connects those two. Now if you setup multiple stream sources, it makes you choose. However, I have noticed going from version 1.1 to 2.0 that everytime you connect to a stream source, it says its loading the content. In version 1.1 once you loaded the source, it didn't have to think. But then on the other hand, I have noticed when you play a streamed movie, it doesn't show you the buffering anymore, for me it just starts playing my streamed movie.
One of my pet peeves though is having all these menu choices when in my instance, half of them have no content. I figured out thru parental controls you can hide You Tube and Podcasts, but for example I only have Music and Photos Synced and my Movies are streamed. So when I go to the Movie Screen it shows both My Movies and Streamed Movies. But My Movies has no data because no Movies are Synced. I wish Apple would automatically hide any menu items that didn't have items in it, or give you the option to hide menu items.
Other than menu issues, i have been pleasently surprised with 2.0. I have noticed buffering is a lot better. However, I did see on Apple's website the download length time for Movie Rentals. I wish they would have posted ahead of time that you need a 6Mbps internet connection to download rentals that fast. I have 1.5Mbps DSL and it took 2.5 hours to download a movie. I guess its not that bad, but considering it takes only 30 minutes to download a movie bought on the Itunes store, something doesn't seem to add up.
Also if Apple is reading this, I hope in the next release, you can take the screen that you use to display movies you can rent, and apply that to movies we own. I love that screen where it shows all the movie coverarts. If they really got adventurous, if you selected a movie, the movies around it could change to similar movies of the same genre. But I know thats wishful thinking.
Anywho, I hope Apple keeps making updates and maybe hopefully they will open up a request line so all Apple TV users can make requests as to what they will like, if Apple TV takes off with this latest version. I think this unit definitely has a shot of being the next best home entertainment device.
Thanks for Reading my Opinion!
