I bought a MacPro 2.66 (2x dual-core) a ways back and it's served me faithfully since I got it. Best machine I've ever had, hands down. It has 13GB RAM, 3TB of storage, and I replaced the video card inside with an ATI 4870 512MB which has been very nice (except for snow issues in FCP's viewer and QT which nobody has ever been able to figure out).
I recently got a 2011 MBP, 17in, 2.2ghz, etc. which is a screaming machine for the portability. I do most of my work on it now having almost ditched my tower. It just sits there sad, lol. However I do video work half the time, and sometimes this MBP is great, but when it comes to rendering especially and things of that sort it's definitely fast, but I just don't like pushing the thing so hard...makes me nervous (should I be?). It's meant to be a mobile powerhouse, but the MacPros show their real strengths on those tough rendering situations and things of the sort.
I initially switched because I was feeling like my new MBP was way faster than my current old MP based on benchmarks and general usability. That and the snow issues in FCP and QT drove me away...was never able to figure that out.
The greatest issue is how my MBP isn't capable of things like sending my edits to an external monitor like my MP can. I have a card in my MP that lets me easily export to my TV, and Production Monitor. External solutions for this stuff on my MBP are cumbersome at best, and as I said sometimes the heavy lifting seems a bit much for my MBP...fast and new or not.
Any general comments in this arena? Is my MBP really the better option right now with my old MP maybe good for just whatever else or late night renders while I'm asleep or something like that? I've thought about getting a new MP sometime soon that would smoke this MBP and just sticking to that for most of the powerhouse work, but maybe that's unnecessary right now?
Thanks for any advice.
