ordered 24" 2.4 aluminum with 500gig from apple store online
shipped from shanghai and recieved.
gradient issue (bright on left side, ugly yellow/brown tint in middle)
called apple
took it to apple store for "verification" of problem
the guy had me call apple from the store to request the replacement
took it back home
on the way back home got in a bad car accident
got my car towed
got a ride from my wife
waited for fedex mailer to ship back for replacement
took it to fedex/kinkos store to ship
received replacement
same gradient problem
called apple requesting to cancel my order for full return
received mailer
took it to fedex to ship
car is in shop getting a tear down

anyway.. i'm thinking it's some sort of bad curse or something. my ti 1ghz powerbook g4 (april 2003) is dying .

should i get the amazon deal for the 20" white imac, order a 20" aluminum and pray, or get a mac pro and take the money out of my childs college savings?

Get the white 20". Minimize your investment and wait for better hardware.
The current Mac Pro is near the end of its life cycle -- bad time to buy.

For the price of a Pro system, you could buy the white 20" today plus
the next generation iMac when it arrives.

...or maybe a midi-tower?

how about buying an iMac from a store, just ask them to open it up in the store so you can inspect it and make sure that it doesn't have the same problem? Not sure if it will work for you, but they did it for me when i brought back my MBP because of it whining and keyboard issues, i was probably being a bit picky but apple emlpoyees know we are a hard bunch to please.
