My 3g 8GB absolutely must give me Bluetooth enable voice dialing, can anyone help?

This being my very first Apple purchase (iPhone 3g 8GB) I took bluetooth enabled voice dialing as a given being as every Windoze Mobile phone has had the feature for years. The phone is capable of it, Apple is aware of the need for it, but has really showed their "evil money grubbing corporation side" on this! I'd happily pay for the feature at this point in the form of an app at the store but Apple added some form of it to the 3GS to try and get people to pay for a phone upgrade and I am not gonna do it, so if anyone knows a hack that allows it I'd appreciate the knowledge. My phone is jailbroken now in part because of this and I won't be losing sleep due to guilt over it!

I actually bought a Windoze mobile phone to replace the iPhone for just this reason and because AT&T's voice dial option as an add on to my service is terrible, in it's infancy and AT&T sells it but doesn't support it and has no techs with actual knowledge about the feature that one can talk to about the matter! When AT&T and Apple partner up to sucker me out of my money this way on a phone and a contract lacking what is for me the most important feature I get a little angry and I don't think it is unjustified! I had to change my phone number to get thew voice dial service to work after I'd made a mistake online with it and I lost money in my business do to it! I understand I should have found out about this before I got my iPhone, but A, it is easy to just assume it has it being as it is over 5 year old technology when phones started having the feature, and B, their is no info that is clear on the matter and I have searched after the fact!

I realize the purpose of any such company is profit and that's one thing, but it always makes me laugh now when I hear some "Apple fanatic" talk about how evil and money grubbing Micro$oft is! Micro$oft could take lessons from Apple on this! Apple isn't a better company or more ethical, it is just more trendy among a certain subset of consumers and offers something unique and different and a lot of good products too.

To compare the two companies in this way is in part apples and oranges as far as the role they play in the market with their products, and red apples and green apples and yellow apples when people try to believe that one company is more benevolent than the other. The concept is ludicrous and laughable! Both companies exist to make money. Both make great products, but both are very different in the products they provide and both have a place. Both are also excellent examples of successful capitalist enterprises.


There simply is no "moral high ground" for fanboys of either company to stand on!

So anyway I have searched till my eyes hurt because I need to be able to touch my bluetooth unit in the car and voice dial, and short of that I have to use my AT&T "Tilt" (HTC), which is a great phone too but save for the one feature I don't like as well as the iPhone I am stuck with! They lost my business though. I hate to say it but I will not be buying any more phones from Apple or probably AT&T again when Android is so promising! Please does anyone have any hint for me?

I am not gonna apologize for a very valid complaint about the lack of a standard feature on the iPhone. I wasn't slamming Apple or Micro$oft per se, just speaking about reality as I see it!

Here is the simple request I need help with:

I absolutely must find a way to have Bluetooth enabled (activated) voice dialing on my iPhone or it is useless to me! My work involves a lot of driving and calling and I will not use a touch screen while driving if I can help it. I should never have done it but I confess I have. Does anyone know anything about making a 3G do this miraculous high tech feat that has been a standard feature of other company's phones for years now?

I hate the fact that I have to hack my phone, possibly technically illegally, and definitely in violation of it's warranty to get this feature when I never would have bought the thing had I known the feature wasn't included.

I love my iPhone other than this which is why it is so upsetting. I had to spend $99 on it, sign a 2 year contract, and then about $101 on a used Windoze phone because of Apple's refusal to add the feature coupled with AT&T's absolute ineptitude in understanding their own $4.99 a month feature that isn't very good even so!

Just for once I would ask that some of you try and see this from my shoes? I am not rich, cannot afford to buy electronics that sit in a drawer and that I have to sign up for bloated 2 year contracts to get a nice price on!

I hope nobody takes this personally, I am always willing to help others when I can, and it isn't personal, it is a desperate last ditch effort to save my iPhone before I just go sell it on eBay! The only plus here is if I do sell it I should be able to get top dollar and buy a really nice phone with Verizon, and buy out of AT&T!
 
1) There is no way to enable bluetooth voice dialing on an iPhone 3G. It is a hardware-dependent 3GS-only feature.

2) There is plenty of information available showing that voice control is a new feature with the 3GS. I certainly knew...it's one of the reasons I bought the 3GS.

3) Since I assume it didn't take you more than a month to figure out that your phone didn't have voice dialing, I suggest you just return your 3G and get a 3GS.

The info was not commonly available when I got the phone and it wasn't something that should have been left out. I guess it is time to sell the POS and get a real and more professional type of phone from Verizon and not a toy to impress people and be in the in crowd. Sorry if it offends anyone but it is how I see it.

I will look into this parrot thing though, just out of curiousity, thanks for your help. I am pretty sure though a Bluetooth profile could be written for a jailbroken iPhone that would enable this but I have no more time or energy to wast on an inferior phone that I could sell for more than I paid for it.

What are they going for used? It is a 3G 8GB in immaculate condition and will be factory restored if the buyer wants that or left as is their choice.

Frankly, the way you're acting, I won't be sorry to see you go. You bought a phone without native voice dialing. It's been known ever since the iPhone first came out that it did not have that feature. That you didn't research it enough before you bought it is not our fault, and you should stop taking out your frustrations on us.

Sorry the iPhone doesn't fulfill your needs/desires. Hope you can find a device which works for you.

Well if any of you took my rant personally that seems to me to be your personal choice and your problem.

Sure, perhaps it is insensitive to trash on a product or cmpany many folks are in love with, and I apologize on that level but that level only, as none of this was aimed at anyone here, even if you choose to look at it in that way.
 
Ideas:

1. Quit complaining, you knew what you were buying when your wallet was out
2. Sell iPhone 3G
3. Buy iPhone 3GS or any other phone that offers voice dialing
4. If you start a new thread, that means that you are looking for input. Have a thick skin and don't take every comment so personal.
5. Start a blog. Elsewhere.
 
Markjs---It's called RTFM. Anyone who did even a bit of honest research would know that voice dial was a 3GS feature. You chose to go cheap with the smallest older model. If you want to complain start with yourself for not doing your homework. I just saw that you knew the 3GS had the feature, and you still bought the G. Grow a pair man and admit that you F%6ked up.
 
You people should really stop making assumptions. I bought this phone before the 3GS was even released so....

I really have no further comment on this except that I will most definitely not be buying any Apple hardware in the future. I may have questions pertaning to helping friends but I am done with crApple when Ubuntu and 7 are so much friendlier to me.

You stated above that you bought it for $99. When was it available for $99 before the 3GS was announced (since at the time the 3GS was announced it would have been advertised with the voice dialing)? Your timeline is full of errors.

I'm new to the forum and even I could see that you were coming across as an entitled whiner. It's less that you hurt anyone feelings (heh) and more that you ensured people didn't want help you because you spent eight paragraphs in a litany of complaint and bids for sympathy.

In the future you'll probably have better luck if you can keep it short and sweet. And polite.
 
The 3G was NEVER available for $99 until the 3gS was released, so the OP knew that it didn't support this feature, decided to save $100, and now is throwing a temper tantrum in this forum.

You would think that if you are signing a 2 year contract you would know what you are getting into.
 
I apologized but since you can't let it go why should I?

I just don't like owning a product and waiting for the benevolent deity Steve Jobs bestow favors like features and throw endless money at him and then walk around thinking I am somehow better than everyone else cuz I am continuing to let him bend me over and I shun Micro$oft like most mac people I know.

That's what you guys are for!

(Being not a crApple worshipper I do not follow every move they make and pray to them like you all....)

(Features that should have been included in the first place like a reputable phone maker might do)

QFT. no freaking kidding. besides, you should have researched that the original and 3G iphones dont have voice dialing.

Just admit that it is BS and the flame war is over.

This is the problem with Apple Fundamentalists, in that they don't have any persepective. Their view of the world is through Apple-shaped lenses. The facts, as the rest of the World see's it, are that the iPhone 3G was missing standard features that you would expect. Voice-dialing is availble on the lowest give-away phone offered by AT&T, you'd think it would be available on their most expensive phone.

This user isn't alone, there are a ton of complaints on Apple fourms. Apple-Fans and Geniuses always blame the user first (I think it is part of their training). I have a few Genius Bar friends who immediately blamed me when my Mac Mini wouldn't eject discs, as if I haven't been inserting CD's for 10+ years. Also, the Apple-Fans are perfectly OK with buying highly priced product from Apple only to have to get it replaced under warranty with a refurb later. When I buy something, I want it to work and I don't want to be stuck with a refurb or I would have bought a refurb to begin with.

The proper response to someone's valid rant about Apple products would be: "I'm sorry to inform you that the 3G can't do voice dialing because of its hardware. It is messed up that Apple didn't include this useful feature, but maybe you can return the phone."

Some of you seem to know how to respond, but there are a lot of Apple-holes (who act like 14 year olds) and start flame-wars for fun. The truth is that all products have short commings, but it seems Apple-Fundamentalists are living in denial when it comes to Apple Product.
 
Well maybe I just don't get it. The 3G doesn't have bluetooth voice activated dialing--and the upgraded 3SG does--so you get the 3GS and voice dial away. Seems to make perfect sense to me.
 
And next time do some research on a device before you purchase it. Just because other phones have a feature you like don't assume everything is the same. Get a windows mobile or whatever makes you happy.
And don't let the door hit ya on your way....
