iPod My 5.5g 80gb iMod iPod stops half way while copying music

I came to seek the infinite wisdom of macrumors, just recently all the albums I've been trying to copy to my iPod stops half way and freezes my computer, I have to unplugged the iPod to get it going again. I can sometimes copy one song at a time but at times still freezes and is a pain backside.

I've talked to some iPod repair guys and they told me it sounds like the hdd is stuffed up but I want to make sure before I buy a new hdd. I was going to upgrade it any way so it's not all bad, can anyone let me know what's the largest hdd that can be installed into this iPod? and where I can acquire one from. I know it's probably easier to buy a new iPod but I've been through a lot to get it upgraded to an iMod and not to mention the cost of the v-cap dock and amplifier.

But it doesn't even get half way. It's really annoying! I've restored my ipod a few times. I am calling apple in the morning. Anyone got any fixes?

yeah sometimes it goes half way but most of the time it copies three songs, please post what the apple guys tell you.

Use disk utility to do a secure erase of the iPod (One-Pass-Zeroing)

Then do an iPod Restore.

This will probably fix it, if not swap the HD. I had the 60gb iPod Video and upgraded my harddrive to 80gb. I think Apple changed the zif connectors on the newer iPods so it may only be the 80gb HD that fits.

Thanks mate, I'll do the utility disk thing and tell you how that goes, if not I'll swap it for another 80gb, I'll only do a big upgrade if theres a 160gb drive because 100gb costs too much and just can't hold all my music

I tried it and it got stuck at 5% and now it's stuck on the apple logo and I can hear the hdd switching on and off. anyone else???

Sounds like the HDD is truly goosed then.

Replacing it is easy enough though. Plenty of tutorials on the web.
