Dafaq just happened!

No, I wasn't driving/walking blind while being plugged in. It's 2 in the morning and I was just watching a movie on my MacBook.

I don't know what exactly caused this but I was skipping ahead in the movie. And all of a sudden the both the AirPods went into this explosive crank noise. My God, it nearly blew my eardrums off. What the hell !! Holy ****! What ???

I had to throw these away from my ears as my heart rate went up tenfold. I swear to God, in my life so far I have never experienced a sound that loud.

I've been using AirPods since April this year and nothing of this sort ever happened before. Now I'm scared to even put these on. I don't care how well they function. Even if there is one in a million chance that I might hear this again, I'll stop using AirPods right away. What is this ??

I'll burn them. If someone goes the length to raise an objection in court against Apple, I'll support that too.

What the hell is this ??

Jesse

Thanks for contacting Apple Support. My name is Jesse. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

Jesse

Hey Sovon!

Jesse

How can I help today?

Sovon Halder

Hello

Sovon Halder

Something very bad just happened.

Sovon Halder

I was watching a movie in my MacBook Pro 2017 with my AirPods connected

Sovon Halder

All of a sudden both the AirPods went on this explosive noise sound

Sovon Halder

I had to throw away the buds from my ears. It was extremely loud.

Sovon Halder

I have never experienced anything like this before.

Sovon Halder

I want to know what in the name of God is this!

Jesse

I can definitely understand why you would want to get this resolved as quickly as possible. I will do everything I can, to come to the best possible solution for you today.

Sovon Halder

I thought a bomb exploded right inside my ear and my head is in pain right now as we speak. What is this ??

Sovon Halder

Am I connected to the proper support channel? if not, redirect me.

Jesse

This could be many things. It could have been the movie or any other program on your computer making a noise.

Jesse

Have you tried the AirPods again to see if they still work the same?

Sovon Halder

I'll burn whatever caused this. Tell me how to check, if we can check.

Sovon Halder

After I picked them up from the floor, they seemed to behave normally

Sovon Halder

But not I am scared whether it will happen or not

Jesse

I totally understand, Sovon. This sound could have been caused by any open program on your computer. It’s not possible to see what just made a noise on your computer.

Sovon Halder

Okay.

Sovon Halder

Fine.

Sovon Halder

I want to follow up with this. I want to get to the bottom of this.

Sovon Halder

I am well within warranty but I do not care if I want my money's worth

Sovon Halder

I want to talk to hardware specialists to see what exactly happened

Jesse

This doesn’t sound like something that was caused by the AirPods, it’s more likely a program on your computer made a sound or it could have been in the movie.

Sovon Halder

The volume was set around 80% in my MacBook. How does a software crank the volume up to 3000% ?

Sovon Halder

Stuff like this can cause serious health injury.

Sovon Halder

I've been using apple products for 7 years now. Never had a complaint except for now. This one.

Jesse

If you’d like to have your AirPods examined, I’d be happy to help set up an appointment with an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Sovon Halder

I want professionals to check and diagnose what caused the issue if there is any log in the AirPods file system or the computer's

Sovon Halder

Tell me what I have to do.

Jesse

I’d be glad to help set up appointment to have your AirPods looked at.

Jesse

To begin, may I have the serial number of your AirPods? You can find this on the inside lid of the case

Sovon Halder

FXWT99B8H8TT

Jesse

Great! Where are you currently located?

Sovon Halder

India, Hyderabad. Pin - 500088

Sovon Halder

This is scary. I'm glad it didn't happen while my 5 year old niece was playing with it.

Sovon Halder

Let me ask something.

Jesse

I totally understand.

Jesse

The closest Apple Authorized Service Provider is APTRONIX NO-4, 1ST FLOOR, SECUNDERABAD, 500003 91 9182562110

Sovon Halder

Is this an isolated incident? Or have there been other reports of incidents such as this ?

Jesse

This is not anything I have heard of happenings.

Sovon Halder

Can you please double check this in your database ?

Jesse

I have looked and I’m not finding any issues like this, Sovon.

Sovon Halder

Okay.

Sovon Halder

The service centre is one hour journey from where I live. Shall I give them a call tomorrow ?

Jesse

You can call them if you prefer and they would be able to give you more information about getting your AirPods looked at.

Sovon Halder

Anything else I can do in the meantime to figure out how this happened ? Any tips or suggestions ?

Jesse

There is not a way to see what exactly caused this to happen.

Sovon Halder

Okay, thank you for your time.

Sovon Halder

Have a nice day.

Long story short... I was told it could have been the program program or the movie; probably an open program.

I was also told that there hasn't been any report like this.

Anybody ?

Yeah, maybe.

In macbook pro 2017 I was watching a regular low bitrate h264 encoded movie in IINA 0.14.1 at full system volume and about 80% player volume.

The fact is that the white noise remained even after the skipping was completed. Skipping takes half than a ms and I heard the insane crank until I removed the airpods; more than a second later.

It might be that the app started it. But it certainly didn’t cause it for a short burst of time. It screwed the airpords up till it was reconnected.

either:
something on your computer made the noise

or

your airpods are faulty

without being able to examine them, as apple have asked to do, any further diagnosis from this point is purely speculative.

I will visit a service center this weekend. Though I’m fairly certain about what the technicians over there will say.

Stop listening with headphones at full blast. It's not Apple's fault if you leave the volume at max.

The AirPods aren't even that loud to cause these dramatic-sounding noises.
When you are on a mac and if both the system volume and the airpod volume are set to max, it can really get super loud based on the type of media that you are consuming. From time to time, I listen to stuff at unnecessarily loud volume level, and even for me, the max airpods can output on certain tracks are certainly uncomfortable.

Nonetheless, this went way way beyond that. At least it felt that way to me. Not that this is related in any way to driver failure but I remember what happened last year when a faulty driver blew the speakers of hundreds of macbook pros in bootcamp.
