Prior to iOS 5, whenever I plugged my iPhone into my 3-4 year old iHome, I would get the "This device is not optimized for blah blah blah.." but it still worked!
I would just dismiss the alert, and then it would play just fine.
Now with iOS 5, I plugged it in and got no alert at all. Cool, so I hit play, and only weird static faintly came through the speaker. So I undocked it, thinking it's time for a new iHome, and synced to my Bluetooth speakers instead. Lo and behold that won't work either! So I deselect airplay and tried to play the music through the humble iPhone speakers, and still, nothing.

When tapped, the play icon will change to the pause icon, but the play-time remains at 0:00. The Now Playing icon also appears up by my battery indicator, but nothing ever plays.

I tried the iHome, bluetooth speakers, iPhone speakers, and headphones all again, still no luck. I quit Music, which did nothing. I restarted my phone, which also did nothing. And so I've come to MacRumors, hoping someone with have some idea how to get my Music working again, even if it means I can't use my old iHome again.

Reload the music on the device. Just wipe it, and load one song to test.

If that doesn't fix it, you may have to restore it, but first just try clearing off the music and loading one song to test with. I had that playback problem a while back and don't recall what I did, but my music works fine now. I AirPlay music to my speakers in my home, listen to music in headphones, and play straight from the iPhone speaker and all works fine.

Hope you figure it out!

See if some crud got stuck in the dock connector on the phone. Might think it's still docked.

thank you alexreich!
I was afraid I'd have to restore as danielsan suggested, but I simply unsynced my music, and am in the process of resyncing it right now. Thanks to iOS 5's usability while syncing I already tested a track and it works just fine.
thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it!

Nope. Mine does the same thing. Apparently there is a huge bug with the music app. Scan this forum and you will find that many others are experiencing the same as well.

I take it you've tried clearing out all your Music and then resyncing it?
Seemed to me like trying to use the outdated iHome just confused the Music app, but replacing the tracks fixed it up for me.

Well its not the ihome, or bose dock system that I have is outdated... its the fact that the phone itself acts the same when I tried to play it without the dock system.

This isn't first time an iOS update has corrupted a users Music.app/iPod.app. Mine has been messed up quite a few times with miscellaneous 4.X.X updates. iOS 3.0 and earlier never had these issues.

The solution is just a emptying and reloading of Music on the iDevice.

Apparently, after I removed all my music and re-synced the songs back on my phone all was ok.
