I have an external hard drive for Firefox, MSN Messenger (Does anyone know a better solution to using MSN messenger the Microsoft version for MAC sucks. True story.) and Bit Torrent on my desktop. Is this normal?

Weird- no it's not normal.
What is the icon preview when you Get Info about the applications?
Are they expanded, or are they mounted images.
I suppose if somebody turned the .app to a .dmg (not via nameing, but by makeing an image) then it might do this.

Actually, all of these things were .dmg. After I installed all of them they showed up as external hard drives, inside of them were the programs with the normal images that would be the one in the Dock.
You mean the icons are messed up? This happens every once and a while for me. I use cache out x to delete the finder cache.

When you double click on a .dmg file, you may or may not get a something.pkg file inside it. You may get the actual application inside it. So when you double click on a .dmg file it will open up and mount as an external HD on your desktop. If the actual application is inside that external HD icon, then drag the application out into the Applications folder. DO NOT drag the white external HD icon into the Applications folder, only the app thats inside it. If there's a something.pkg file inside it, then double click on it and it will launch the OS X install application. Just next through it, agree to the license agreement, choose the correct HD icon (most of the time you can only select the bootable HD), and then click install.
When you're done, drag those external hard drive icons to the trash (which will turn into the eject icon), or click ONCE on the external hard drive and press apple+E to eject it.
If they reappear when you login (or on restart), go to System Preferences, then to Accounts, the Accounts System Preferences should appear. You may have to click the lock in the bottom left to authenticate. Then select your username and then click Login Items. See if those external hard drives are in there as a login item If they are, click ONCE on it to select it, and then click the minus button below. Do the same for the other one. If they aren't there, then just quit system preferences and I'll have to think of something else.
EDIT: Also see if there is a .dmg file in the login items as well.

That is, when you get info the applications have the .app extension, not something else. Right?
To see what the extension is Context Click->Get Info>Name & Extension
