Got the $49 Black Friday 3GS Refurb today. It was dirty, had a row of about 10 pixel width burnt out on the screen near the bottom as well as a burn out spot in the middle of the screen.

I was surprised at the condition and sent in back. Previously I purchased a Refurb 4GB Gen 1 iPhone from Apple and it was in pristine condition. I thought the same would be true for AT&T. Such was not the case.

I wonder how many other people received a trashy iPhone like I did.

Hate to hear that. Hope they make it right for you. Apple refurbs are truly in pristine condition. I assumed AT&Ts would be the same.

That doesn't sound too good. I'd take it to the Apple Store and have it replaced; they usually do that immediately.

You gave up too soon :D
Apple could have taken care of it for you and saved yourself $150 without having to buy a new one that might also have other issues and might need to be exchanged for a refurb unit.
Sometimes you gotta be lucky with iphones I guess or keep going to Apple till you find one thats acceptable.

Man thats not good to hear. I also received mine today and so far everything is just fine. No scratches on the phone, nor dead pixels. Only thing I have noticed is my MMS isn't working. I just upgraded from the 2G plan though, so I'm hoping its just a network problem..

I guess it just depends on who had the phone before they sent it back and how long they had it.

Hope it all works out in the end for you though!

And you have any proof or inside information that the AT&T refurb process is any different or worst than Apples? As far as we know they might be using the same 3rd party company to refurbish them.
Or you think all refurb iphones Apple puts out are perfect?

The moral of the story is don't get a refurb from AT&T. The standards are not the same as Apple uses for refurbs.

i got my refurb'd iphone from ATT today, and it was perfect. not a scratch on it, and as far as i can tell. works perfect

That sucks dude, but it doesn't surprise me. This isn't the first time that I've heard a story like that.

Too bad you sent it back so quickly..... I'm sure that if you would have taken it to an Apple Store, they would have swapped it for a (better) refurb.

Maybe I'm just unlucky with AT&T refurbs.

Previously I had a problem with a SONY cell phone (one with a slide out keyboard I forget the model #). It was only around 3 months old and after some hastle, AT&T said they would replace it. The replacement looked like they fished it out of a barrel of broken phones. It was a complete piece of junk. It worked when it came but broke a couple of months later. We replaced it with a no frills $29 Go Phone (actually a very good basic phone).

I've been with AT&T (previously Cingular) for about 8 years now and am seriously thinking about switching to Verizon when my contracts are up (about a year from now).

Mine, too.

Out of 4 refurb devices, I've only had one with problems, and that was replaced in about a week.
