Just wanted to let everyone know about my GOOD experience wit jailbreaking my iPhone 3GS. I had 3.1.2 on my iPhone 3GS for about 2 weeks or so and i decided recently to jailbreak my iPhone with blackra1n's amazing one click tool. Not only did it take a matter a minutes, I was surprised to see that my phone wasn't restored and I didn't have to reload music, apps, or anything(Thats even before syncing back with iTunes). Ever since the jailbreak, no problems with calls, MMS, 3G speeds(cross fingers). I'm sure there are some of you a little weary of doing a jailbreak, and I was too. But i decided to just take the gamble, i knew that i could always restore it. So this thread is mostly for the people who have seen other threads with people and their jailbreaking issues, hopefully they will see that jailbreaking can sometimes be a great experience. Thanks for reading.

so you had the latest firmware on your phone before doing the update?

Yes. I had 3.1.2 on my phone already and it wasn't just before the jailbreak. I had apps music and contacts on there. Then I jailbreaked it, and I have had an amazing experence ever since

I'm due to upgrade my 3G tonight with the new blackra1n in combo with blacksn0w how simple is blackra1n? is it just like redsn0w?

Here's how simple it is:

1) Start Blackra1n.

2) Click "Make it ra1n"

3) Plug in iPhone.

Steps 2 and 3 interchangeable, I believe.

I agree. I've used Pwnage Tool, Redsn0w, and Blackra1n and NOTHING was easier than Blackra1n. I'm impressed by Geohot, and honestly I think Dev Team could learn from him on ease of use.

I love it nice simple and straight forward :D

I know, right? After using Pwnage Tool and Redsn0w I was ready to dedicate a couple hours to a jailbreak. Took maybe 10 minutes, and the best part was you don't have to restore or re-load music/apps/videos. Seriously, so easy.

Yup, I concur; Blackra1n has been the easiest JB yet. I strongly recommend the Blackra1n JB for 3gs 3.1.2FW...:p

I prefer the cushion of an "older" BB :D and being able to update the BB if needed, and in the mean time... using Dev-Team tools is not that hard, just read during 10 minutes.

By the way, I prefer to wait for Dev-Team assessment about this exploit, and the implementation into redsn0w as it seems many people are having problems with wi-fi (which seem to be solved with a settings restart), but some others are reporting bluetoots/gps and signal problems after some time...

If you're on 3.1 (or 3.1.2) and new BB, it doesn't really matter, so if you need to unlock, use blacksn0w, but if you are on the old BB... just wait for the analysis of Dev-Team, no need to rush (right now, the only flaw with the old BB and newer FWs is the network's name, which doesn't seem to be a big deal... and I'm not risking the unlock for the name, at least until it's proved that the exploir used by geohot is stable enough)

but geohot was the sole guy to kick off the whole jailbreaking craze, the dev team came about after he got the unlocking\jailbreaking underway.... you cant get more reliable than him

it's not just the name, cause its an older baseband with newer firmware it doesn't store the network data details properly, for the couple days I had 3.1.2 with version 4 baseband I was constantly gettin network dropping and messages saying subscribe to data bundle. Plus redsn0w will be using the exact same exploit and implamentation as blacksn0w so I don't see why u need to wait for redsn0w implamentation

Remember, when you are done jailbreaking, send the guy a donation. We all have iPhones and data plans, so you can surely afford to send him a few bucks.

Jailbreaking is a security hole!

Ars Technica writes in the very recommended article blacksn0w unlocks 3.1.2; Apple looks to curtail jailbreaking:

On the iPhone, security exploits are essentially what make jailbreaking possible, and Apple is looking to beef up the security of iPhone OS. The company recently posted a job listing for an iPhone OS Platform Security Manager, which will oversee a team "focused on the platform security of iPhone OS."

They should hire GeoHot and MuscleNerd ;) Please mind the security hints in the Ars Technica article!! (Change the default passwords.) 3GS users only: Mind the special hints for "tethered jailbreak" there.

Tighter security is good, but the more secure iPhone OS is, the harder it will be to jailbreak. It took some time and effort to get blackra1n—and particularly blacksn0w—working, and GeoHot warns that "[t]his may be the best iPhone users ever have it." Apple could—and likely will—patch the exploit that makes the jailbreak and unlock possible in the future.

Ack.

My experience has been a little bit different. Im with ATT and i did the blackra1n method (basically to unlock my iPhone 3GS and do the tethering hack). Now i get sudden signal drops with NO SERVICE, then i get back to normal. This has never happened to me before doing 3.1.2 and/or before the unlock. Does anybody else have this same problem?

I guess I am in the same boat as wschutz being already unlocked and jailbroken under 3.0.1 and the old baseband.
I also have MMS working form ATT.

As far as i see there's nothing in 3.1.2 that I really want or need?? Given that my phone is working great right now, i dont know if i want to rush upgrading and doing everything again and then risk having issues.....
Am I missing something here? i can see for someone who accidentally upgraded to 3.1.2 and lost their unlock..but are there any advantages for those with the older baseband/OS to doing this if they're already unlocked?
Thanks!!

edit: the only advantage i see right now would be that I'd be able to download apps that currently require 3.1.2 to function but i haven't ran into any of those that i want...

Had to get apple to replace my faulty iPhone and the replacement came with 3.12 already on it so I thought I would be waiting for a while. Might give this a try later on and see how it goes. If its all good I will definitely donate.

I had very bad battery drainage with Pwnage so I had downgraded back to 3.0.

Today, I upgraded to 3.1.2 and then ran Blackra1n and so far the battery seems normal. I'm gonna use it for the rest of the day and see how it goes.

Easiest jailbreak ever. :)

I have an unlocked iPhone 3G running T-mo..

If I restore my phone, install the new OS, all I have to do is run BlackRa1n to unlock for T-mo?

Still.. is it worth upgrading? Someone else on here told me it wasn't.. just making sure. I'm still running OS 3.0 but Haven't had any issues with it.

You may as well...especially since they can unlock it for you now. It really is up to you, though.

is the process basically, restore phone, put ATT sim card in, run blackra1n and unlock, put Tmo sim in and reboot?

My experience was very bad. I have a 3GS pwned with tethering/winterboard many apps. I was forced to restore my phone as it will only get to the silver apple logo once it boots after i installed blacksn0w this morning. So I restored, try to use blackra1n for JB, it worked fine, quick but whenever I tried to install winterboard it will reboot back to the apple silver logo only. I have practically spend my whole day restoring my phone for over 6 times now. I did noticed that dev-team saying there's problem with blackra1n and winterboard so i also tried pwning but winterboard still doesn't install. One of the proudest JB I consider is my cool winterboard theme. Anyone please help.

When it says to reboot after installing Winterboard, exit Cydia and reboot the phone manually.
