OOOOOOOHHHH!!!!

Well, after spending ages running up and down the stairs and looking out the front window for UPS vans and drinking far too much coffee this morning, my new iMac has finally arrived! And she's a real beauty.

OK so it's not the very latest one with built-in iSight. It's the previous model - 2.0GHz 17" SuperDrive, 160GB HD, 512MB RAM. I bought it from the UK Refurb store late last Wednesday so I'm quite impressed with how quickly it has arrived.

Was slightly nervous about buying a refurb, in case of dead pixels or scratches or anything... however - it is cosmetically PERFECT, was all wrapped up as new, even smells new. I even have the pretty iMac box not some tatty brown carton (although there are some ugly 'certified reconditioned' labels stuck to it)... and most importantly, there are NO deal pixels. Phew :)

Sadly there are no 'extras' - I've heard of some lucky people getting extra RAM etc when ordering a refurb. No extras here, but I still think it's an amazing deal. I have a 12 inch PowerBook so this is my second mac and even though it's better equipped it'll still be my secondary machine since I prefer the portability of the notebook... hence the reason for not buying the very latest, or the 20 inch model. (actually i don't like the look of the iSight on the new one and the other features seem a little gimmicky)

When I plugged it in, the mouse wasn't working... since then I've realised the mouse IS working... it just doesn't like my table surface. Doh! How stupid do I feel now, having tabbed my way through the registration process and even plugging my graphics tablet in to click "Agree" on all the software update licence agreements?!!! In my defence, I have never owned an optical mouse before :p I need to go shopping for a mouse mat and perhaps a better mouse (got the bog standard old Apple one).

I bought the iMac with my Egg Money card so *hopefully* i'll have got the extra 10% cashback, though i'm unable to view my account balance at the moment. Anyway, assuming that i did get this, then i'd like to say a special thanks to bollard for pointing out the cashback deal in this thread. Cheers!

Ooooh looks like it has just finished installing all the software updates now so i'll go and play with my new toy...

Is the fan/hard disk/whatever noticeably noisy on other people's iMacs?

Nice one. :)

As a fellow iMac G5 owner I can pretty safely say that these machines are prime.

I don't think it is. Have you turned the Processor Speed up to Highest in the Energy Saver preferences? It'll make the fans come on slightly more often but it'll also make it substantially quicker. :)

It's noticibly nosey in so much as yes, you do notice it. No where near as quiet as the PowerBooks.

But is that an original iMac G5 or the second release (Rev B)? Either way, I agree it'll be much noisier than a laptop, that kinda gotta be assumed. :)

Cheers for all your responses!

The processor performance was set by default to 'automatic' so I've upped it to 'highest', as mad jew suggested. Guess I'll learn to live with the noise. I'm sure it'll all be fine once I transfer my iTunes across.

Ummm, no, really MacDawg I think i'm keeping this machine. Cheeky monkey!!

Ooh typing on a full-size keyboard and using a mouse feels *very* strange. I've been a notebook user for so many years.

I think this is a Rev. B (the one with iSight is C, right?) - what's the tell-tale sign of a rev B? This is a 2.0GHz Superdrive model with Airport & BT as standard. Oh and it shipped with Tiger so i guess it must be a B.

Yeah, it's a B all right. I think that means it should be slightly quieter than your 'tarsake's. :)

Hehe did you hear that e? Mine's better than yours :p ;)

This is one beautiful machine (apart from the jet engine noise)! And matches my rather white minimalist flat perfectly :)

All in all, have to say i'm *really* pleased i went with this one and not the one with the built-in black blob at the top. Also this one is 2.0GHz and the new 17" is 1.9GHz. :how odd:

Right... i have to stop drooling now and get some work done...

Great news about your refurb. It was a pleasure in pointing you towards the Egg 10% deal. I think you'll find it makes you enjoy your iMac even more. Also remember you get 10% cash back on any iTunes purchases.

Aha. I see Applespider's been weaving her web again... she is a most persuasive woman. ;)

DCV: Congrats! Getting a new Mac is so pleasurable -- so much fun, it should be illegal.

Ditto! Yay! iMac G5 owners will take over the world! Or... at least MR and apple discussion boards... or, fine, whatever. At least some threads! :p

Yes, the fan noise and noise overall drove me to actually turn the processor speed down... even w/ it set to auto I can hear it hum and truth be told, I'm a little disappointed w/ that aspect of it. Definitely louder than my PB and my iB... maybe louder than the two of them put together (dunno for sure since the PB isn't here)?

But anyhow, congrats dcv!!! :D And thanks, Applespider, ;) sometimes it takes a buddy to make you realize you 'need' something!

Cheers! She has indeed... I'll hold her entirely responsible when my credit card bill comes in ;)

Oooh it's quite interesting switching between reduced and highest power. On highest it sounds like a plane taxiing down the runway!

Can't wait to get my iTunes on here to block out this racket. I just haven't had time yet. Got an incredibly busy workload at the moment and so far spent most of the day just admiring this new baby... *oops*

I can't believe no one has asked the most important question yet!

Did you get the Apple stickers?!!

LOL... *goes off to check the box*

YES! 2 Apple stickers. I'm telling you this thing is MINT. :D

All original Apple packaging (well, i assume so, never had an iMac before). The box is a little bit dirty because they didn't bother putting a brown carton around it but i can live with that. And hopefully i'll be able to carefully peel off those "reconditioned" stickers.
