My Brother says Android will go down in size to iPhone 4 by end of 2014

My Brother, is an iPhone guy, mainly for it's smaller size, says he wants to go Android, he really likes the Nexus or Galaxy S3 phones, but says they are way too large, and is a big turn off to a lot of people. And also says the home button on bottom front of the iPhone, is a very important feature to have, you can turn the phone on with one finger while sitting on the desk, to check things. He said most Android phones you need to press the side button to turn on, and while phone is sitting on the desk, that is really a two hand operation.

The big thing he said, which I LOL'd big time, he said will make a $50 money bet right now on this statement; "By the end of 2014, all top end Android phones like the Nexus 6 and Galaxy S5, will realize they have gotten way too large, and will go back down to the proper size and width of the iPhone 4." He didn't say or expect screen size, but said the WIDTH, he said by end of 2014 top Android phones will go down to iPhone 4 WIDTH. He knows the screen size will always be larger on Android compared to the iPhone, but says they are mainly way too wide, and will shrink the width by end next year.

My opinion is that NO WAY will this happen, Android phones in 2013 will be larger than their previous 2012 version. Of course they will reach a point to stop growing in size, can't keep getting bigger year after year, but NO WAY do I see them going backwards to iPhone 4 WIDTH by end of 2014.

I think this happening by 2014 is way too soon - but I could see it happening in the not too distant future....

Though I disagree on only width. All high-end smartphones (now iPhone included) are 16:9 - meaning if the size of the screen decreases it will happen both width and length......

I personally feel between 4" and 4.5" is the sweet spot.....and while I think the phablet category will still be around, I think the "hype" and press will lessen in the coming years and phones will go back to a "normal" size....

This may all happen with the advent of being able to use your smartphone as a "computer tower" - i.e. dock your smartphone into a workstation and use it as you would a computer.

Well, if the evolution of technology continues as rapidly as it is, low end and mid range phones by then will be way faster than what we have today. But the higher end ones will probably stay larger like 4.7", 5", 5.5", 6" etc. Or we'll all have watch phones by then.

I personally like my Nexus size @ 4.7", it's not too large like the Note 2, and not small like like the iPhone 5.

I had the Galaxy Nexus too, and now the Nexus 4, I find this size very comfortable, just right.

4.5 inch is a sweet spot IMO. 4 inch is still to small for reading some files on the go which i like to do sometimes on my phone as i hate taking a big tablet (5.5, 7, 8, 10, they are all big for me) and the only thing i want to take out is my phone unless i wanted to take a tablet out for something important.


I would say even 5 inches of screen embedded in minimum bezel and utilizing mostly or all swipe gestures would still allow a decent sized phone, perhaps a tad bigger than the iPhone 5 frame. Look at the Xperia ZL (smaller than Z with same screen), they have done a fine job at it.


And lastly I would say we can leave the over 5 inch phablet market to others. Not everyone wants those, and so you always have people who would want a 4 or 4.5 or 5 inch portable phone instead.

I like my Nexus 4 screen, it's 4.65 inches but with the on-screen buttons it's more like 4.3 inches. With these onscreen buttons I'd happily go to 4.8/.9 to end up with 4.6 inches of screen space.

Although in moments like watching videos the buttons thankfully disappear.

Sounds like your brother is really an iPhone guy. What is it he actually likes about the Android devices, if its not the lack of home button and ridiculously massive size? If he wants to customize it, jailbreak that baby!

Until some other form is adopted for the mobile phone I think that just under 5" with little or no bezel will become the norm.

Yea I really disliked the loss of screen-estate to those onscreen buttons when I had my N4. I wish they disappeared for more than just videos. (I know there are tweaks and roms that will hide them but for me the workarounds to replace them were not worth it.)

My opinion on phone sizes in near future. I think this year 2013, we see Android phones go even larger, and in 2014 the iPhone 6 will get larger too.

But come 2015, I think we will plateau, and stop. Seeing the size go back down. I think by 2014 most Android phones will be 5", but that may backfire, and come back down to the 4.7" / 4.8" size in 2015. But by no means, do I see top Android phones, going all the way back down to 4", no way, maybe 4.5" at the smallest.

And I see Apple reaching that size too, possibly the largest iPhone @ 4.5". By 2015, most smartphones will all be pretty much the same screen size.

he was comparing 5.5" to 4" displays. There is a MASSIVE difference....even 5 to 5.5 is very noticeable.

The reason screen sizes have gotten bigger is because phones have become multi-media devices. Bigger screens are better for watching video and browsing the web etc.

I wouldnt want to watch videos or browse the web on my old Sony Ericsson W800i...

Phone Screen sizes will continue to stay this big or even get bigger unless phones suddenly stop being used to watch videos and browse the web.

That is exactly right. Very people use a phone as just a phone....they are multimedia devices, and bigger is generally better for this. 5" is probably a perfect combo of small and large. I have a note 2 and wouldn't want bigger than that.

Now my Brother complaining about another Android OS issue, compared to iPhone, he is asking, on a Nexus 7 tablet he's trying "How can I move the cursor to the 'end' of an input box, like in Google search page...? If you have a long sentence in there, seems impossible to move to the right"

He says again "See, on my iPhone browser, If I'm on Google and I want to add more to my long search screen, the minute I tap the box it places the cursor on the far right. That way if u need to add or delete stuff from the end, u can do it"
