Edit: got an advance return via speaking to apple support, thanks for the thoughts and comments!

..minor, but annoying, damage out of the box. Do I send it back and wait again? Feels subpar for the price but I know it’s a minor thing.

Def return it! Personally and with high cost items I'd prefer being the one to put it's first mark on it.

call them ,explain your problem ,and gently ask for a commercial gesture

they might give you a partial refund .after that it's up to you but I'd happily take 50-150 bucks for that kind of deffect .just check everything else is fine .

it's still perfectly functional and I don't think it'll bother you when actually using it .besides ordering a new bto model now is gonna take u quite some time I trust right ? and you gotta return the old one ...time's money

thank you for letting me know

good for him anyway .the pricier the device ,the less acceptance/tolerance .it's normal to expect a near flawless machine for this budget
totally agreed. Otherwise there's never ever motivation to attempt QC improvement, something that's been going downhill lately with Apple. Mind you, I wouldn't accept such preexisting damage at any price point from any manufacturer, not even with a price reduction. Anecdotally I wrote, wanting to be the first to damage it, not the manufacturer.

Sounds like you’re on track to get a replacement 👍

The first thing I thought of when I saw that was: was it dropped during assembly/packaging? I wouldn’t trust a brand-new machine with damage like that even if I was inclined to accept it cosmetically.

There is a completely practical reason to return it for a brand new one, independent of the thoughtful psychological things people say here. If a year from now you decide you want to trade it in for something else, you will not be able to check the box that seems unblemished, looks brand new. And the trade in value will decease significantly. More than half. That's not just because it is blemished, but because the assumption will be that it was dented in a drop or fall. It trade in and resell value is reduced from the get go--and it should go right back. Unless you are absolutely sure you will never want to sell it or trade it, return it. A partial refund does you no good in this regard.
