I am also seeing this. But it seems that its only the UI/sound that freezes, since if I'm on a call on Skype, the recipient can still hear/see me perfectly.
On a few occasions I've seen "WebIUServer" pop up as an icon on the dock right before a freeze, no idea if its related...

Mountain Lion made iMac HD disappear

I installed M Lion on my iMac and first it worked ok but then it froze. I restarted using the on/off button. But then I got the 'select language' window, then the OS X Utilities window came up. I tried the options there, but the Mac HD did not appear in any! So I couldn't repair, restore or reinstall.

Then I restarted holding comm+R and got Disk Utility, this time the Mac HD was in the list. I chose Verify the Disk and it reported that it seemed ok! I restarted and now it's ok again....but I'm now scared it will keep happening. I wish I hadn't installed M Lion.

I have the exact same issue. In fact it tries to connect to WiFi but can't, and then freezes. It doesn't happen the whole time I believe it may have to do with the program which is running in the background when I close the lid and put my Mac to sleep. Most of the apps running in the background are Mac apps like Mail, Safari and Calendar. The other two programs which could've caused this are Reeder and VLC. It may in fact not be either of these apps but simply a general problem with waking up from sleep which does not get triggered every time but often. It would be great if you could share a solution if you find one.

Couple of possible solutions

Run disk repair and disk permissions. Apple disk utility
Then try Diskwarrior

If those don't fix it do a clean install, make sure you have backed up
With time machine.

I went as far as a clean install off a ML bootable USB I made. No apps installed, and I'm still seeing the random lock-ups (which only seem to be UI not responding)...

I also contemplated with doing a clean install after everything crashed on my system. There seem to be a memory leak issue with some of the 'new features' i.e. imessage ... other than that-- iTunes tends to crashes and scrolling tends to get sluggish too.
I guess I'll wait for apple to update and clean up all the bugs because right now my system is NOT stable and I don't recommend anyone to install ML w/o having at least 8 g of ram.

I took the plunge and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion on my machine and I have to report after about 30 min of using the new install, with barely anything installed it just froze up in the exact same way as before.

For me everything appears to be fine, things stop moving and the video does a tiny amount of scrambling. I can still move the mouse and have to hard reset the machine.

I did take it into Apple and the hardware passed all checks. Reset everything.

Network Lockup Culprit - Transmit

Greetings,

A few of us are discovering a connection between a lockup issue on waking and Transmit. Are you experiencing these symptoms?

1) Mountain Lion is the OS.
2) Transmit is running.
3) Mac goes to sleep.
4) On waking, Mac tries to connect to network, fails, then the top right section of the menu bar beachballs when you roll over it.
5) Mail and Calendar both lock up (due to network failure)
6) Opening System Preferences locks up when trying to open Network.
7) Only restarting will resolve the issue.

I've been in contact with Transmit and they are investigating the issue. Read more here:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/19132589

Just thought I'd toss this into this thread in case it helps someone.

I wish that had helped but I'm dealing with at least 5 crashes every day on my Macbook since installing 10.8.

This is even with a fresh install so doing that is of no benefit really if you are suffering from this problem.

Question, is anyone else with this problem using a secondary monitor?

Macbook Pro freezes watching a movie on Netflix-

i installed mountain lion last night. serene screen's aquarium (3.02) no longer works for one. but more importantly my computer completely froze up while watching a movie on Netflix. after shutting off the power and turning the machine back on again the computer automatically returned to where i had left off and no further problems were experienced. however this has never happened to me on this laptop (2.3ghz i7 and 8 gb ram w/ 512SSD).

2012 MBA (i5/8GB) here with a CLEAN (formatted and no time machine) install; same here. Never froze once in 2 months of Lion.

Complete freeze, about once every other day; hold power button restart is the only solution.

Not even freaking close!!!! I do know apple is aware and working on a fix to the issue. I have gone back to lion on my primary Mac pro and left ML on my Macbook Pro so when apple gets the fix I can test it My laptop continues to crash at least 5 times per day. I will post as soon as I know more.

I experienced the issue after at least 10 clean installs of OSX! After the last clean install my computer rebooted once again with only 3 installed programs (!): the unarchiver, iWork (illegal), and Office 2011 (illegal). Then I concluded that every time my MBP crashed it contained either one of these programs. On that I concluded that one of these three programs could cause the problem as numerous people do not see any problems such as these with Mountain Lion. Therefore, I performed another clean install leaving iWork aside (as this program is oldest.. 2009..) and did install the other programs. Remarkably, my MBP hasn't crashed yet! Hopefully it stays that way.

Noteworthy, I performed the clean install with use of an external drive and removed free space manually before every clean install. The last time I didn't do so, I re-downloaded Mountain Lion from the App Store and did an UPGRADE. (Hence: Not a fully clean install).

So, the thing I recommend:
1. look at the programs you installed after OSX installation!
2. If iWork is one of those programs, leave it aside and see if that resolves the problem of continuous crashes and reboots.

http://roaringapps.com/apps:table might help you to check the compatibility with Mountain Lion.

My MBP works just fine for now and hopefully it remains stable, hopefully the above mentioned might help you guys.

Good luck!

I recommend the same thing that worked for me with Lion; go back until at least OSX 10.x.2 .......:)

ligid software vs illigit and freezing

I have a Pro 2011 (i7/1333MHz, 8GB) only legal software on the Mac and still it freezes regularly after I installed ML. Did fresh re-installs but none works properly. My paralles are all *******&-up as well. Last time I update after a release. Think I should start using the Windows philosophy and wait at least a year then the bugs are out.

I got the freezing yesterday... today it happened again. I did the same thing when yesterday it froze, and when today froze. I worked in photoshop cs6, music played in iTunes, and I used itunification app (it shows the song infos in notification center). I'm using itunification for 2 days.... so I was thinking... maybe notification center make the freezing?

Sounds like what I am experiencing on my white 2010MB.

Today I partitioned the drive in my 2010 MB and installed Lion on it so that I can run that for several months until all the ML bugs are fixed.

I don't use my Macs for anything intensive but I am experiencing three major problems with what I use it for.

1. The menu bar freezes. I can stop a process in activity monitor which forces the menu bar to reload but then a few hours later the bar freezes again.
2. With 4GB ram, I should have enough there to watch HD videos purchased in iTunes without having to close everything but iTunes. Rarely experienced that in Lion.
3. Videos purchased in iTunes freeze for no reason, sometimes for several seconds. They then fast forward like a VCR until it catches up to where it should be. Never had this happen in Lion.

Can't comment on the battery issue because I don't use my MBs as portables.

iMac Same Problem

I have tried a lot of things to fix my issues since the Mountain Lion upgrade. I have even taken the iMac to the Apple store.

These things happen only after computer wakes up from sleep:

My menu bar freezes when switching wifi networks.
Skype keeps crashing
Crashplan icon disappears from menu bar after computer goes to sleep
Clock is incorrect in menu bar but correct under settings.

Things I tried that did not fix problem:

Unchecked "Put hard disc to sleep when possible"
Numerous restarts
Deleted : /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist (per another posting)

I do not use Panic's "Transmit" FTP client

My mid 2011 base mac mini froze for the first time yesterday, and then again today. Both times I was able to move my mouse but nothing else was responding. On both occasions I had to power down by holding the power button for 5 seconds.
I did an extended hardware test which showed no problems

Forget to mention, I was browsing the web both times using the latest version of Chrome..
