My dilemna....

Got the wife on a patched together iBook G4 that she loves, she's a Windows convert. I've got my G4 MDD 867 on my desk and a "1st Gen" 2.0Ghz MBP.

I wanna get an iMac and give her the MDD since she'll just do iPhoto, Pages, mail, and web. My problem? I so want an iMac with the 256MB VidCard since I can't upgrade once I get it. I also wish I could get a refurb - but they gots none of the 256MB goodness in refurb models.

I could go education discount and get the 20" with the 256 for 1667, but I'm thinking that the longer I wait the better chance I get a newer model.

Iv'e been a mac user forever and a lurker here for some time, so I know the rule, once you buy then Apple upgrades the unit. I also can't get past the iMac being a desktop with a mobile processor in it. I'm just frightened by the potential cost of a PM.

Why do you want the optional video card? People often recommend buying "up," but there's a point where you go too far. BTO systems are non-returnable, so they're almost never going to show up in the refurb store.

It's not a mobile processor. It's a Core Duo, which is used in desktop and mobile computers.

Still, you don't seem to have asked anything, so I suppose your dilemma really ought to be, "do I have a question worth posting?"

Actually, it IS a mobile processor. Apple just happens to be using it in some of their desktops. It's Yonah, the stop-gap successor to the Dothan core Pentium M, a mobile chip.

The first true Core architecture chips (different from the current Core Duo) that will be unified between desktop and mobile are:

Core 2 Duo - The "Merom" mobile chip
Core 2 Extreme - The "Conroe" desktop chip

Good info on the Core Duo - so it really isn't as much a "mobile" processor as it is a Mobile AND desktop CPU that has crossover. I'm old-school so that idea is new to me I guess. Haven't had to think that way really since the Celeron came out.

I got my Powerbook TiBook 1Ghz that way, an 800mhz iBook that way, as well as my 12" Powerbook (all custom BTOs that I got through the refurb section of the store in the past), so I'm not sure in this case you pulled your head out of your arse long enough.

Careful, newbie. I was just pulling your leg for using the forums as a mental post-it. Posts generally should offer information or ask questions. Idle thoughts belong elsewhere.

I didn't say never, but it's rare, because as I said, they're not returnable unless defective. BTOs that do float by are few and far between and almost always former broken machines.

But please carry on speculating on the location of my head. I'm sure it's a worthwhile way to spend an evening.

Wow Ok I guess the kids have spoken! I"ll take my posts to spur discussion elsewhere. Relax kidlets, all in good fun. These are forums, not a police state.

I could ask:

1) Did anyone have a mental block that the iMac seems to have a mobile processor inside it?
2) Does anyone really miss that 128MB of VRAM in the lower-end 20" vid card?
3) Where is Matticus008's head. I have an idea, but he said further speculation is worthwhile.
4) Can a brain really fart?
5) If idle thoughts dont' belong here in the MacRumors forums, where do they belong? I guess I shouldn't take up space over the 400 "What should I buy" threads eh?
