Ok, i wanted to take the beauty of the timeless imac g4 and the iphone and moosh it together, this is my first mockup so its kinda rough but basically, its and iphone styled screen mounted on an imac g4 style arm which is connected to a flat aluminum base. It is accompanied by a multitouch control station which is used as a trackpad, keyboard, drawing tablet ad anything else imaginable. Tell me what you think! =] i really hope the future of the imac is something similar to this as i really dislike the current look.

No wait a minute, give this a second look - we'll forgive your Photoshop limitations:)

Anyone else think this might be a possibility? Large iPhone-like screen with/without touch ability and a super sleek peripheral (can you get much sleeker than the current aluminum keyboard?) Look at the trend over the past few models of iMacs, look at where Apple is obviously spending a lot of energy in the design of the iPhone and touch iPod.... I don't think something like this is too far away...which would be bad for me because I just bought a new iMac last week!

Ah thanks guys, and yeh im kinda bad at photoshop. But yeh i actually did try adding a rounded base (using an old airport base station) but it looked tooo imac g4ish...

When apple finally puts touch into the macs I expect there to be a design like the G4 imac so the screen can be moved from horizontal to vertical for various touch implications. However, don't expect a new iMac design for a few years.

the idea of it is cool. i like the iMac w/o a 'chin' with just a small bezel around the screen. but the coolest is the multi-touch keyboard. im guessing this would be some sort of LCD screen with iPod touch abilities? so you could take the idea of the of the Optimus Maximus keyboard (with keys that have individual screens behind them) and just have one large screen with multi-touch. you could change the configuration of they keyboard for each program. it would be cool if you could even change the layout of the keys, some sort of super-ergonomic keyboard that 'learns' where your fingers go and adjusts the location of the keys to match your comfort. The only thing missing is tactile feedback. I have no problem with the iPhone and lack of tactile feedback, but I am sure that would be the first complaint of a keyboard that actually lacks keys.

A few things I see:

There's nowhere for the computer to go. I reckon it either needs to be bigger (then you'd end up with the current imac..) or have the machine in the base. How about the old g4 imac ball, but in chrome? Finger prints aren't much of an issue on the base itself. And it'd look lickable. (hmm... perhaps not the best way to talk about balls ;)

The keyboard looks like a 1980s spectrum somehow. And a pure touch screen keyboard would be awful to actually type on. Maybe something like the keypad-less bluetooth keyboard, but longer, with a touchscreen where the keypad would go? Or make the whole display touchscreen and have a standard keyboard?

Otherwise, I quite like it.

Well, think of the thickness of the macbook pro, couldn't they basically take the bottom half of a macbook pro and place it behind the screen in a lovely new iphoneesque imac?

Naw, then they wouldn't have room for the 3.5" HDD. And the specs would be terrible.

I think the design is a bit different, and different is better than people using the fugly iPhone as desktop model. Not that the iPhone design sucks, just that it sucks as a desktop design. The iMac G4 design was okay, but I don't think slapping an iPhone on the stand would make it better, neither making it black or chrome.

I think the future of the iMac rests in a design that is completely different and break through, not a rehashing of something that has already been done, or a melding of two product ideas. I'd rather have a really big touch screen that is 30" wide that is somewhat like the current design, but much more stream lined.

And the current design makes 24" models possible, I don't think the G4 design would have allowed for screen sizes and weights that large.

p.s. Trackpads SUCK

Also i forgot to mention, it would be nice if the display i have there was on a swivel mount so it could rotate into portrait mode, for image editing.

This is a nice try dude, but I really don't like that at all. Much better photoshop job than I could have pulled off though. :)
