Hello, I am getting an eGPU for my MacBook Pro 16-inch with a 5500M GPU and 2.3 GHz i9. I want the eGPU mainly to drive two external QHD displays, and possibly a third QHD or 4k display in the future. I envision my MBP connected to the eGPU, where the eGPU enclosure provides power to the MBP. Then, all externals will be connected directly to the eGPU, so that the only display the MBP's iGPU or dGPU drives is its own built-in display, which will hopefully reduce heat and improve performance.

From the enclosure perspective, I am pretty certain the Razer Core X Chroma (want the USB ports) is a good setup for me. For the GPU, I am a little less certain. I am leaning toward the RX580, although this is an older design. Additionally, the enclosure is stated by Apple as supporting the newer 5700 XT. The 5700 XT is a good bit pricier, but the 5500 XT is less, plus it is a newer design than the RX580. However, I am unclear as to if the 5500 XT is supported as Apple's eGPU page does not list it, but it also appears that this page has not been updated since the 5500 XT was released. So here are some questions:

1 - Does this generalized plan sound reasonable for my situation?

2 - Will the newer 5500XT work?

if yes
3a - What implementation of the 5500XT is best in terms of performance and thermals, or are most of the different brands more or less going to function the same?

if no
3b - What implementation of the RX580 is best in terms of performance and thermals, or are most of the different brands more or less going to function the same?

4 - Finally, are there any other cards I should consider?

Many thanks!

@ght56, how is it working out for you?

It actually took a bit of a step on the back burner as I returned the 5500M MacBook Pro and purchased a 5600M model. The amount of heat from the 5500M really had me concerned, and I wanted to be able to use the dGPU while often on battery and on the go. That said, I am still thinking about an eGPU down the line...possibly a 5600 or 5700XT to power a few displays throughout the home, but for the moment the 5600M model has me set.

I have the Razer Core X Chroma with 5700XT with my 16" MBP, driving a 4K monitor and a 1440p monitor. It works really well except for one quirk. The ethernet port is not stable at 1Gbps under MacOS, I have to set it to 100Mbps.
