My fellow iPad toting college students, post here and give some suggestions!

Hey guys and gals. I'm a 21 year old college student, I go to community college and absolutely adore my iPad. I take it to class with me during this summer semester and take all my notes on Pages. I haven't really tried any other school related apps. Also, what are you guys doing about getting textbooks onto the iPad? This is something i haven't done this semester because the iPad was just too new and not many people knew much about it yet. But for the fall I would love to get all my textbooks on the iPad, how will this be possible? Especially with multitasking in iOS 4, the iPad will be every students dream. No more carrying around heavy books. Any app and textbook suggestions? What do you guys do with your iPads in school?

You'll have to contact your school's bookstore to see if they're available. I find GoodReader and Docs To Go the most used iPad apps for school. I also use Dropbox and EverNote. I do see the iPad (or tablet) as a textbook(s) replacement. Imagine carrying around just your iPad....
 
To OP: how do you take notes at school? By typing? I tried to use Pogo stylus and it's very clumsy one to write notes. And typing is not as fast as the keyboard. Please share us some of your know-how's on taking notes as well! :)

Honestly i just type, but only in landscape mode. I've learned to love the touch screen keyboard because at landscape size its almost the size of a regular laptop keyboard. And spell check pretty much fixes most errors you make so i dont have to go back and delete very often. I wouldnt even attempt a stylus for writing, doesn't seem practical. The touch keyboard takes a little getting used to, but once get used to it its like second nature.

I considered that at first, but i'd be more likely to do it if apple had a dock connector on the side of the ipad as well as the bottom, so you can use it in landscape mode. I'm not a big fan of portrait mode in general, i do almost everything in landscape other than reading forums or news articles.
 
When I'm not listening to lecture, I'm either in facebook or macrumors....:D

I love this iPad... I don't need to print and staple 50 pages to make a study guide when I have an iPad to stare at!:)
 
RIght now I am using Evernote, but I may replace it with Pages. I do have both apps, so we will see when I start college back up in September.

I find typing on the iPad to be just as quick as a regular keyboard if it is propped at the right angle.

Try Notepad Pro I think. I prefer writing but haven't tried a pen for iPad yet. I'm decent at typing and would prefer to do that along with audio recording.

BTW, your signature should have a ";" (semicolon) after "iPad 16GB" instead of "," (comma).
 
I'm still contemplating whether or not I should purchase an iPad. I feel like it would be a great asset for university. However, an app like Pages would not suffice. I'd need to supplement it with a pen-input app. Drawing molecular and cell structures, vector diagrams, and even annotating PowerPoint slides isn't possible in Pages.
Has anyone had any luck with such an app to supplement Pages?

what i always do is google the diagrams i need and copy and paste them into pages. that way i dont have to draw anything and i have a perfect labeled diagram from the internet
 
I love my iPad at Uni. In the middle of a lecture, my lecturer came over and had a look at my text book on the iPad.

Some textbooks are available on the Kindle app, but I got frustrated as some of the textbooks are only available for the Kindle and not Kindle for iPad/iPhone/Mac (plus it formats them funny so you don't have the correct page number)... So GoodReader & Google are your friends ;)
I don't take notes on it though as scientific notation and equations are too hard to input quick enough, but it's great not having to carry several textbooks that weigh about 3-4kgs each.

Isn't that a tremendous amount of work? Can you elaborate some more, because I think I missed what you were saying. Are you referring to diagrams in the textbooks you don't have on the iPad, or lecture slides posted by your professors?
 
My son is a junior in college and uses soundpaper all the time. I also use it for meetings.

I like sound paper because i can take notes while recording the meeting, than i can go back, highlight the words i typed and it automatically adjust the sound file to what the speaker was saying when you typed the notes. I find it really usefull in meetings.

I think talking about it is frowned upon on here, but it's amazing that there are people who spend insane amounts of time scanning 1500 page textbooks onto .pdf files :D

My physics text book from 7th Edition to 8th Edition is exactly the same with the exception of the problems, so if you took the course twice, you'd have to buy the textbook twice to have the right problems to answer!! Prevents us from buying second hand as well... Grrr Textbook manufacturers, they should be happy with charging $250 for the stupid book once.
I'm poor, i quit my job for Uni and spent all my money on my iPad :)
 
Readdledocs is also a good app to carry PDF en textfiles with you.
Plus over Goodreader is that you can make annotations and hightlight text.
 
I juggle a few different apps to keep myself organized.

I use Pages if I'm working on a paper. DocumentsToGo Premium for class notes, Evernote for all other notes, Things for task management and to dos, and Goodreader for document storage.

I also use sound paper for my lectures. Its beautiful. So easy to use, I love it.
I'm hoping there's gonna be some textbooks in the iBook store soon. But no one knows. Id kill to be able to have all my books on the ipad. Id be able to study anywhere, and all the time.

Have a look at Noterize app... It's cheap, records audio which gets attached to individual notes and also allows you to scribble some diagrams with your finger. I bought it on Monday and haven't stopped using it yet.
