I know this is the Laptop board, but I'm posting it from my REV A Blackbook so I think that counts haha. Actually I'm a HUGE LURKER on this board and I know most of the people that post regularly on this part of the forum so I wanted to post it here.

ANYWAY. I went to my girlfriends house and her parents bought a new computer. I thought oh thats cool, and I was reading the box and I saw the Vista label and Im like OMG. Like somehow I never really thought that it would ship with vista haha. Like to me the windows world is so distant that Vista never seemed to be a reality. Like when I think of the mac community I think that like 90 percent of us update their OS within the first week it comes out. When I think of the windoz community I picture people updating their OS years and years after the OS has been out, only because they need the new hardware.

Well I had never tried vista and here's my review:
It was on a new computer with 2gb of ram so everything ran very smooth and I was quite impressed. I saw the "gadgets" and they suck. I saw the ripoff of expose and it sucked in comparison to the mac counterparts. Both features were not as intelligently designed as the Mac counterparts. The instant search was as expected and it ran fast. IE7 RSS actually impressed me with it's speed and elegance. I was a little jealous because safari 3 hasn't been much of an update IMO. But again I am just using the beta. I did notice that apple did copy the translucent menu bars from Vista. That kind of annoyed me, but it looks good so I didn't really care. Overall Vista seemed to run pretty well and was a good update for as far as windows can go, It's about on par with mac osX 10.1....MAYBE haha

you're right about macrumor'ers updating their OS's the day they come out, but I'm sure there are plenty of "not as avid" mac users out there who are still running older revs (well actually I think jobs once said 85% were running tiger or something.) Vista is so darn clunky and heavy, which makes for a really sluggish and annoying computing experience. mac os x is so much smoother and it doesn't annoy you with little ads/messages every 3 seconds!

I tried vista on my PC for a while, but nothing worked better IMO, allot of the changes were bad. It was slower, missing certain features (like going UP in "my computer") and video playback/Surround sound is buggy. I went over to XP after a while (when vista crashed)

In regards to the translucent bars, this was a feature of OS X 10.0 see window top left of the screenshot.

It all depends on the hardware. For me, Vista runs smooth as silk.

Do I like it as much as OSX? Nope.

For Windows, it's pretty nice, though.

My father bought a (preloaded) Vista laptop in June. I'll be visiting the parents this weekend, so I'll have a look at it to see what I think. As a user of both OS X and WinXP , there's no doubt in my mind which product is superior. I wonder if Vista will balance that view at all? After all the reviews I've read, I don't expect to be that impressed.

I'm taking my 15" MBP along for the trip, so I will showcase some of OS X for them. Any suggestions as to what I should highlight?

I use Vista at work every day. I finally had to turn off Aero because my eyes kept getting drawn to the blurry-glass title bars. They were really quite distracting once I had a few windows on the screen.

Anyway, that's two ugly UIs in a row for Windows:

Luna = Fisher Price
Aero = Gaudy Goth

Of course, OS X used to be Pinstripe Hell, so I guess even Apple makes mistakes. :D

Expose, the Dock, Spotlight, Finder, Dashboard...lol, everything.

Anyway, I just put together a PC that my nephew's father bought for him and it came preloaded with Vista. Now, I'm an old XP hack and through the years, I've managed to tailor XP to how I want to do things. I think I streamlined XP to the point where it was actually manageable.

Vista, I find, is a heavy beast. And it almost seems like features and functions and fashion is there "just because." I'll play with it some more to get a better grasp of it but first impression has not been positive.

I knew somebody would respond to this....I'm talking about the main title bar. Not windows title bars...and even if it was possible, vista made the main title bar standardly translucent first
