My First iMac - Questions!! *refurb thoughts*

Ok so i got my 3.06 GHZ 8800 refurb. It is amazing!

It can play crysis all on high settings - it can get laggy in high action though, so i have half medium half high. It has a Windows User Experience rating of 5.8 or similar, which is quite high!! my old PC was 4.0! :eek:. Refurb in PERFECT condition i swear it is new ! just an excuse to get rid of old generation ! lol i was lucky to come by it. And btw the 24 Inch screen seems small after a few days! gosh!

Anyways I have two questions. When I start the computer up on the Leopard side annoying keyboard "pop" (the computer saying 'no' sound) happens once every 3 seconds or so until i start a program or click on a menu ... or just do something! ???? what can i do to make it stop??? it goes away very shortly, it is just random and never did it when I first got the mac, only recently!

ALSO regarding bootcamp when i start up my iMac i hold down "alt/option" to choose startup disk and it dosen't appear! ???? i have to get into Leopard go startup disk utility and click windows then restart instead ! What is wrong?


And also I have put 50 GB of my stuff on it now (and that all of it) however it has slowed down just a bit ...like when I first got it there was no beach ball .... and now there is sometimes *ONLY* sometimes. Rare but it does occur sometimes. Will upgrading to 4GB RAM solve this?

I have encoded and inserted to movies into itunes (from real DVD's from my collection) and insterted 50 GB of music and photos. I have installed Office, Aperture, Aidium, Handbrake and a few dashboard apps.

EDIT: OH and there are TWO files that i had from windows on my LaCie HDD which i deleted off the HDD on the Mac and now they are stuck in trash bin and wont go! how do i delete these files forever?

Suggestions?
 
You have to hold down option right after or just before the bootup sound ends.
 
I would suggest you boot from your install CD and verify your disk as well as repair permissions. That could help your boot/option key problem as well as your trash issue.

In addition, you can follow the advice in this thread for deleting the trash from the terminal.

And "yes", I would recommend the 4 GB upgrade for your RAM.

Lord - congrats on your iMac. You're post was a bit to wrap around at first :p but I think I've got a few helpful tips or at least food for thought.

I had some very similar issues with my iMac 8800 GS. After spending a few hours getting it the way I wanted it I was still experiencing strange noise popping sounds upon boot, minor freezes and the like. I also had issues with boot camp. So I decided to wipe everything and do a new/clean install from DVD. It resolved every single little strange issue I was having. You'll find as you search around more that many a Mac owner solved many a glitch by simply starting over and clean. Keep in mind to still run software update after your new install if you so choose that path.

As for your stuck files from your external HDD - holding the Option key as you choose Empty Trash from the Finder's File menu should do the trick. As for you noticing a slight slow down and the beach balls just a bit more it's probably normal. Once you start filling up any computer some minor slow down is inevitable. But I say by all means upgrade that bad boy to 4GB if you have the means. It will indeed increase the overall speed/efficiency/feel of that machine and theDDR2 RAM you need is a steal these days. OWC has the 4 GB Kit you need for $54 right here http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/6400DDR2S4MP/ Not pimping any one place - Crucial has good Apple RAM as well and is even a few $ cheaper but you can send OWC your current 2 GBs in for cash back which is pretty cool and eco-friendly to boot.

In summary you have a great iMac and paid a great price. It sounds like you love it and you should. I'd highly suggest a new install and starting over before you worry about it maybe being bad. Keep in mind if things don't seem to turn around you may have a bad machine - it was a refurb for a reason - but you have 14 days at the very least to return it. Did you buy Apple Care? Let us know what you decide and how things turn out.
