my first kernal panic or freezing

k well my macbook froze for the first time...
this is the situation...
i was just changing the wallpaper in my desktop and i kept pressing f11 to see it without having the opened windows in the way...
while doing that..my arm was pressing down on the trackpad button (this was for a good 5 seconds)...suddenly my comp started to get really slow...the dock wasnt even work...so i decided to restart by clicking the apple icon...it said it would restart but it did not restart...

so i held the power button until it turned off...i turned it on again...
everything seems to be fine for now...but did turning off the comp that way ruin or nething? or did i do nething wrong? (besides the track pad button)
 
Did you get the beachball when it was doing this? I don't think it was a kernel panic, did you get a message that said that Mac OS X unexpectedly quit, or something like that?

Agreed... Unless you got a screen that basically greyed-out your desktop and locked your computer, you did not get a kernal panic (someone please correct me if I am wrong).

Regarding any damage... Don't know man, sorry.
 
You should have just waited out the slowdown. Something was going on, who knows what, but you weren't doing anything particularly heavy on the machine so I would say there is nothing to worry about.

And this is not a kernel panic. That is when you get the grey screen and it says to restart in about 6 languages. Believe me, when you see it, you'll know (and even then there is little to worry about).
 
nope..no msg at all....it just immediately slowed down as if i were on windows....so i turned it off and on again...and it booted normally...

Man the first time that happened to me it scared the sh&t out of me... I thought a virus from the Matrix had taken over my computer.... j/k
 
so im fine right?....everything seems ok...

except now..ive noticed things are a bit slower to load up...is this due to the restarting..in terms of the ram...? get what i mean?

also in istat ive noticed that my free memory is usually lower than my inactive memory...but due to restarts...my inactive memory is much lower the free memory...

eg. inactive 120mb, free 512 mb....

is this normal? i just noticed my net is slower this whole day...

When you restart, programs are not loaded into memory and therefore are slower the first time you launch them.

do u have any input on the memory inactive vs. free? or is this normal on a reboot?

also is it bad to reboot the computer a lot? i usually put it to sleep when im off to bed..and when im out for the whole day i turn it off...

It's more wear on your computer to restart a lot. I usually just leave my MacBook Pro on all the time. And it's very normal to have a lot of inactive memory and little free memory. It's not good to have a lot of page outs though.

my memory situation is that i have more free memory than inactive memory...its usually not like this for me...

is this normal after a reboot? or is this normal at all?

It's very normal to have lots of free memory after a reboot. I did a restart an hour or two ago and I still have over 1GB of free memory.
 
alrite..thanks soo much for ur quick help..i appreciate it...
hopefully i dont want to run into things like that again...

thats why i switched from windows to mac
