My first kernel panic...

Last night, I got my first kernel panic on my mbp c2d. I've had it for about 3 months. At the time, I was downloading a file and surfing the web. I clicked on a youtube link and all of the sudden i got that grey screen where it says to restart.

Right after the kernel panic, I restarted as it said and did a repair disk permission and it said it repaired a a flash player plugin or something like that. Do I need to worry about anything? I'm not very good with computers, and this has me a little worried.

but i'm already running 10.4.8

i also had to do a disc repair. verify disk found one error. everything seems fine now. what did i do to get the kernel panic? i don't want another.

My Macbook 2gig 1 gig ram is fresh back from the Santa Monica Apple store after getting it's heatsink/logic board replaced from random shut downs. Now this week it's plagued with what apparently you all are calling kernel panics. It happens when I'm just surfing Safari and when I'm in entourage. It happens most of the time after the machine has been on for 2-3 hours. I wanted to go to the genius bar today but there were no appointments available. What was going to be a nice experience with them rapidly fixing the random shutdowns has now gone sour. This will most likely be he last time I buy a new release from Apple. Now I'm afraid I have no confidence in the little machine which is a pitty as I just got all my media and apps finally loaded in the machine. Will let you all know what they say when I get to the Genius bar late Sunday or early Monday.

Kernel panics happen for a variety of reasons.

Apple has gotten better at keeping them from happening, but I had two last weekend, which were 2 of 3 in 2 years on this machine.

One I had happened during web browsing and that really doesn't make a lot of sense. The other one was while I was copying from disk to a flash drive, which makes more sense because it was using kernel extensions.

Make sure that your hard drives are maintained and your permissions repaired. External devices may cause problems so you might find the problem when disconnecting a USB device.

In any case, you might never see another.

My machine is back from the second visit to the genius bar and over night stay. They said it was the RAM. The machine lasted 8 hours before kernel panics and now, can't even get the machine on. Can't even get into the genius bar in Santa Monica until 2:40p tomorrow. PISSED! Now this getting out of hand. especially since I'm sitting here typing this on my husband's new HP. There seem to be an awful lot of these kernel panics. Any info would be most appreciated. The KPs happen when surfing, in entourage, in MS Word. There's no pattern.

Are you using RAM that was purchased from Apple or an Apple-compatible vendor? Using substandard RAM can cause problems in any machine.

If you have one Apple stick and a third party stick, you might try the Apple stick alone and then, the other one alone to see if the behaviour continues.

As I said to the original poster, make sure that your hard drive volume and permissions are in good shape. I was surprised to find that a drive volume problem was leading to KPs years ago.

Any of those things may help.

do you guys think i'm in the clear now since i haven't had another one in five days? i've been using the computer heavily also. maybe it was just an isolated problem, and not anything to do with hardware?

It's Apple RAM. They installed it upon purchase. The 2nd visit they replaced the RAM but kernel panics continued. It's now at the Santa Monica store for the 3rd visit. We'll see what happens.

You're fine. I had one for no apparent reason (it just happened while I was on the internet?), but it never happened again so I never worried about it. I didn't even check that kernal log thing.
