Congratulations on your new iMac. I've also just picked up the same model as you in the last week and wanted to tell of my experience. I've been a long time reader and this is my first time posting on the forums.
For ages I've wanted to make the switch from windows to mac, so i could get more serious with my graphic design. Probably 4-6 weeks ago i wanted an iMac and began researching what one would suit my needs. I really liked the specs of the i5 and i7 models, but the screen size just wasn't practical for me. Sure i would have got used to it, but i know it would have annoyed me having this beautiful monster of a screen with so much extra real estate at home then going to work everyday and having to work on a 20' screen all day.
So the 21.5 model it was. I decided to go with the high end, don't really know why, i don't game at all, just felt i would be better of in the long run with the higher end model. I have plenty of extra external storage (1.5tb) so the hard drive size didnt bother, but figured a little more won't hurt. So i had decided on the high end 21.5.
I watched and read countless reviews, unboxings, forums, just so i knew what to expect. I became concerned i would end up yellow tinge or the high pitch brightness issue, reading about these issues began to put me off buying and decided to wait for the updates, which rumors were saying were not far away.
I sat on my hands for a few weeks waiting, nothing, rumored dates for updates came and went and still no word on any new imacs coming soon. In this time, my asus laptop which has served me well for the last 4 years has begun to show its age. USB ports seem to be dieing, the hard drive occasionally makes some odd noises. I decided to buy now so i have time so get everything switched over and set up before my laptop bit the dust.
After having read and researched for so long, i already knew what i needed to know and didnt really need to ask the salesman much at all. He went out the back to find the stick, that's when i noticed a slight yellow tinge on there display model. I became worried at that stage with what to expect when i opened mine. I figured theirs has probably been running for the last 3 months straight and thought positive that it wont happen to mine.
I grabbed applecare as well and handed over the money. I'll be honest, it was kind of hard to hand over a large amount or money for something i wasn't sure if it would be perfect once i opened it up.
I got it home and made room for it's new home. Unboxing my first mac was like christmas ( i realize that sounds silly haha) i was pretty excitied. Once all set up, it was time for the moment of truth, I hit the power button and that magic sound. First thing i look at is the bottom right hand corner. It looks discolored, but i think i was looking too hard for something that wasn't there. Once the desktop showed up, everything was perfect, no dead or stuck pixels, no dust under the screen or discolor, no scratches, finger prints everything was perfect.
I then read about an upcoming update in a couple of days and feel like ive made a bad mistake biting the bullet too soon. Tuesday came and went, no news, im happy. Even if the do get updated in the next few weeks, im not worried now, Im glad i went ahead and made the purchase.
I realize i have written a bit of a novel so thanks to anyone who has taken the time to read through it. To finish up, Im more than happy with my new iMac, everything is perfect, no defects at all. Still in the process of getting stuff transferred over and setting things up how i'd like but all up it's great.
My advice to anyone deciding to wait or to buy, like many have said if you need it, go for it, buy it, youll be glad you did, if your not in desperate need, maybe hold off, but is the update really going to benefit you that much? It probably wont for me so I'm more than happy with the current model.
Once again, sorry for the novel and the thread hijack but just wanted to post some positive experiences as opposed to all the negative ones on here ive read. Thanks guys
