So I have been wanting a Mac since I started getting interested in photography. I also loved the simplicity of the computer.

I joined here a little while ago to read and post sparingly. I have learned so much in my short time here, thanks!

Anyway, a little about myself. I am a Junior at West Virginia University, majoring in Communications with minors in Advertising and Entrepreneurship. The Advertising minor here seems to be pro-Apple. I take some online classes and work in the video production department for the football team here.

I've had a Dell laptop since I started school here. Over the past week or so it was basically done. I had hundreds of pop-ups coming up. Programs wouldn't open... I cleaned my hard drive, no dice. Nothing seemed to work, downloaded adware, etc. Nothing worked... So I found that the best alternative was to jump into the Mac world. I had originally wanted a MacBook, but I like having a big screen, plus if I can get my Dell working again I can use that as a laptop if I need to be mobile.

So, I went with the base model iMac ordered from Apple.com. I got next day air for 46 bucks, because I needed it by today. Well, as of yesterday they didn't know if it would actually ship out by the end of this week so I just cancelled it. I had to swallow my pride and go to Best Buy and buy it there with no EDU discount. That was hard, but oh well, I NEEDED it today.

My girlfriend loves it and is already talking about her next comp. being a Mac, good deal...

Here's where the questions start. I need office for my online classes (at least I think I do.) I downloaded NeoOffice, but it wouldn't recognize the .docx format on my friends computer sent to him as a test. My question is, I need it now... should I go back to Best Buy and just buy the student edition for 149.99? Or should I try and troubleshoot NeoOffice to work, any suggestions on that? I can get software through my university at journeyed.com, which makes the Office 2004 Pro version at 79.99. Will I still get the 10 dollar upgrade for 08'?

I have already discovered widgets. I love em', probably the best thing besides all of the fun I've had with photobooth. Are there any must downloads out there? I just downloaded Adium...

This jump doesn't seem to be as big as I thought. The help tab is the best thing ever on here. You should have seen me trying to eject a DVD from the drive...jesus, I'm an idiot. Anyway, thanks for all the help in the past on here and the help that I get from this thread.

Neooffice should save in MS Word format.

Just make sure you select 'save as' and change the file type to 'Microsoft Word *.DOC' format.

It sounds like you saved it in the default NeoOffice doc format which is not compatible.

BTW Welcome to Mac-land!

That docx can easily be converted to something readable on the mac. Docx Converter 1.1 is an example - it's a widget that converts docx files to html.

Hopefully you only need to read and not edit and re-save to docx, as I'm thinking there is no good way to do that on a Mac...

Office 04 does not work with docx documents, you can open them with TextEdit (came with iMac) or use this converter. You have a trial of iWork on your Mac, it really is fantastic, especially Pages. I recommend at least trying it out

Links (some download links) to pretty much essential software: VLC (tons of video formats), Perian (codecs for Quicktime), Flip4Mac (wmv for Quicktime). Stuffit and The Unarchiver.

Some enhancements: Inquisitor and Safaristand for Safari. Mercury Messenger, video in MSN etc.

After installing Inquisitor, try the Google search bar in Safari, you'll be amazed :)

I always have Camino on hand in the ultra-rare case of Safari not being compatible with a website...

There is no need to use a third party DOC converter. Neooffice supports Word 2007 documents natively.

Just use 'save as' within Neooffice and your done!

Well, I wouldn't call it native - it uses a 3rd Party converter and the whole mess is still in development. Better than no support at all though...

Thanks for all the posts so far, keep em' coming.

Maybe you all can help me on something. I'm on hold with apple right now and been on hold for 30 minutes...ugh. Anyway, I can't open Itunes on my old computer, because of the said problems with my old Dell. How do I deauthorize that and move my music over to my Mac?

Wvuwhat, me too!

I was an avid PC gamer. I built my last 4 PC's. I am thoroughly enjoying the Apple experience. I haven't jumped into boot camping my iMac. Soon. I had one instance of freeze-up and I was really concerned with the heat that my iMac was generating but have read enough on this forum to know that what to worry about and what not to.

iwork 08 saves in .doc format, pages: .doc keynote: powerpoint format numbers: excel format

Just put my order in for iwork. I tried the free trial which was suggested in this thread earlier. Submitted a paper to my teacher over the online ecampus site and she was able to open it up perfectly. So I bought it on the spot. Thanks guys, keep it coming.
