So this is my 3rd project for my Maya class. I have been using Maya for about six weeks now. Tell me what you think. I am really tired right now, I stayed up the whole night working on this because it's due today. I spent about 16 hours on it combined. A lot of sewing involved. I learned a ton of techniques to save time next time though. We haven't gotten into texturing yet. :)

All you Maya Pros tell me your thoughts.
(It's the Osprey, incase you didn't know.)

Hard to tell from the screenshot but it looks like it's coming along nicely. I'm not familiar with this aircraft but some of the shapes seem a little blockish at this point, the props in particular. What type of modeling method are you using, NURBS, Polys, Smooth Proxy or SubDs?

well, ill tell ya this, its a LOT better than my attempts 6 weeks in to learning maya lol, i havnt been using it much lately (learning zbrush), looking forward to seeing more pics.

We use Polys right now, we just started to learn about NURBS, but I missed part of that lecture. I didn't have time to really smooth it out. I plan to do more with this project after this semester is over. But now I have to start my next project, modeling a building on campus. Kind of a lame project if you ask me, compared to making an aircraft. :D

You have a good start there but Polys alone may be a hard way to get what you are looking for in a model like that. I know that a lot of guys who model cars/aircraft use a mix of SubDs, NURBS and Polys.

If you are interested in looking into that farther you may want to check out these DVDs

Both places have a great deal of DVDs about Maya, they are an excellent resource. It may save you a whole lot of headaches along the way.

If you get back into it, show us some more. Good luck.

Hey, thanks for the links. I am still trying to understand all the NURBS tools. I need to focus on the basics still, but eventually, I will def. use the more advanced methods.

Edit: I just looked at your portfolio, it's cool to have someone as talented as you just browsing MacRumors and posting so casually. I bet a few celebs browse it too.

Take your time, there is a lot to absorb. I haven't taken any Maya classes (or any computer classes for that matter). I tried reading the manual but it's the first manual that soundly defeated me. The slow sound of my skull cracking made me stop half way through. The DVDs from those sites are how I learned (and a hand full of books), not trying to push them on you but they are quite good. Another site you might want to check out is

Lots of free stuff here.

Just my way of giving back, thanks.

I don't think Paris has access to a computer at the moment. ;)

Thanks again, my instructor actually just recommend the same tutorials and website yesterday (odd coincidence). :)
