Greetings guys (and gals),

This is my first post in 15(!) years. I was pleasantly
surprised my account still existed. Came to MacRumors when I first became enamored with Apple products while waiting for the launch of what became the iPhone 3G. I was only 11 years old at the time and I remember my guitar teacher having the original, he talked me into waiting for the next one because of the much (at the time) faster 3G baseband. Followed along with all the leaks and rumors on here and it satiated my appetite until it finally launched. I remember the environment here being so optimistic and excited! Now I almost wish I would have sprung for the original, seeing how much they sell for nowadays. 🤣

Ended up getting the white 16 GB 3G on launch day, which was also the launch of the App Store. I was one of the only kids in my class to have a phone at that age, and I remember everyone being jealous of how advanced it was. The novelty of the pinch to zoom, the joy of being able to browse full websites and not just the clunky mobile websites of the era, everything we take for granted nowadays.

I remember watching the old Mac vs. PC ads and being so excited to get a Mac next. I even downloaded tweaks to make Vista (yikes) look like OS X on our home PC with a simulated Dock and everything. 😅

Eventually did get my first Mac, a 2009 MacBook. Got into jailbreaking mine and friends iPhones and iPod touches when it was still relevant to get the most out of the devices, I felt like I was some type of hacker from the movies even though the ready made tools basically did it for me. Fixed people’s screens over the following years, that was about as deep as I got into the intricacies of tech beyond the surface level, never to the level I had been when I was younger.

Fast forward to the present day and I’m now 29, will be 30 in April, and have been through a lot. 3 Macs and about 5 iPhones later (I kept my iPhone 6 and X for years on end) and I’m attempting to rekindle that wonder and excitement for technology I had as a kid. Relationship troubles, other adverse life events, and the resulting depression and anxiety really pulled me out of the things I used to be on the cutting edge of without me even realizing how much time was going by. It really does fly and I’m currently trying to find the balance between remembering the past and being prepared for the future. Mostly I just want to be present in the moment without the weight of each pressing down on me so much, if that makes any sense.

I’m typing this on my new iPhone 17 Pro Max, my first iPhone since the iPhone X. Currently waiting on a replacement screen for my 2017 MacBook Pro, my previous replacement panel failed and is a flashing, pixelated mess. Installing it myself this time as I don’t trust the secondhand repair stores after the damage they did to the casing last time (inquired at the Apple Store, they won’t even send it to a repair facility as they don’t manufacture the component anymore 😂). It’s a bit of a bear at this point to be sure, but moneys tight and it still functions well for the simple tasks I need it for now so I’m going to get as much as I can out of it before hopefully upgrading to the M5 Pro MBP whenever it is those eventually release. That’s what brought me back for the most part, wanting to know the specs and rumored launch date ahead of time and remembering how accurate MacRumors reporting was.

Many thanks to anyone who read this all the way through. Decided to fight through my social anxiety and look for my old account and make a post, even decided to leave my old signature the way it is for the time being to remember the good ol’ days. Excited to be a part of the community again. Any discussion about the state of the site and/or forums these days is welcome to help me get back up to speed, particularly from anyone who was around back in the day.

All the best to everyone! 😊

Well, I signed up about 2.5 years after you did. Wanted a community that was still dealing with PowerPC Macs in 2011 like I was. Found it here and stayed.

Welcome back. Aside from the fact that a lot of the fanboism has left, not much else has changed. Still friendly people. The forum software has been through about three changes with the last change allowing Dark Mode. If it's been some time since you even looked around you'll see that the downvote button is long gone. There were upvote/downvote wars and so management disabled that. Now, it's just a range of reactions.

I hear you on anxiety. Glad you were able to overcome it and post.

MR is great as it spans both the retro early Intel & PowerPC repair Mac folks as well as new bleeding edge Apple silicon fans & iPad/iPhone. I was pumped when MR got dark mode. I didn’t notice the eye strain pre dark mode but now can’t live without it - ahh the simple things. I also would tweak win2K and XP etc with docks and osx-like gui functionality back before I got into my first Mac. Heck I still do that on my gaming winboxes lol. Anyhow, I hope your screen repair goes well & welcome back.
