my first post with my new macbook air!

hi everyone,

So I've just bought a macbook air today 1.6 80hd model. I've spent a couple hours with it and so far it's been great. I had to return the first one today because of a couple dead pixels but the apple store i went to was nice and just swapped it out. One thing I realized so far is I don't need a cd drive and I already feel like I can live without the ports. I also own a macbook pro and a macpro. I do some music production and I can see myself only doing that on a desktop anyway. I don't play games so the gma x3100 is not a big loss for me. I do see the whole idea of the air being a secondary computer though, or at least it took a second computer to transfer all my stuff and make installation images and such. My final opinion on the air is you really can do quite a bit with the air. Its just you have to adjust the way you do it a bit.

p.s. i'm coming from a core duo mbp so I absolutely love my battery run down @ 3:28hrs...it's not 5hrs but it also isn't 2hrs

Hmm, my 1.5 year old MacBook lives for about 4 hours of moderate surf/chat/type use with Airport and Bluetooth on, and screen brightness set to maximum-minus-3 position (default screen dimming when disconnecting from power). 129 cycles.

MBA has been a disappointment for me despite the features that I like (kb backlighting, weight) its really a seriously underpowered machine that can't even run the multi-touch gesture animations at more than 2-3 FPS

I'm sorry for your situation. Have you tried the new Flash Player Beta? Have you tried to use Cool Books?

To answer a few questions and comments, I'm not exactly power savvy with my use of the laptop. I think if I really adjusted my use I can hit the numbers other people get with their airs plus I havent really cycled through the battery enough times yet to break it in. I definitely understand why some of you say this laptop is unusable. If your having problems you should definitely demand help,service or exchange from the apple stores. Be persistent about it. They say they can't sometimes but there full of crap. just push them. I had to deal with the same issues during the mbp launch. Whiny computer, bulging battery etc many exchanges later. I also had issues with my iphone where it locked up and had to get an exchange. Not to mention 2 red dead pixels on my macbook air which at first they told me no. It might seem that all apple products are like this...Well go to notebookreview.com and hit their forums up. These and other issues happen to all laptops from all manufacturers. After all my exchanges, they all work fine and I wouldn't trade any of those items for something else. Its also sadly apparent that I have bad luck with these kind of purchases while i see other people with the same stuff but no problems.

Defects come with buying electronics..hdtv,computers etc.
Apple is no different unfortunately.

Either way, second day on my macbook air, got dualboot with xp finished.
so far so good

I just spent nearly an hour watching YouTube videos and the machine didn't even get warm, much less lose a core. Sounds to me like your unit could use some service.

MBA is awesome..coolbook worked for me...have you tried returning it?? it's an expensive piece of equipment, if it doesn't fit your needs or isn't working, you should return it, ASAP

No Problems with MBA

You know it might be easier to say "your MBA is the worst laptop you have owned", but the majority of users (including me) do not have that problem.

As for using it as your secondary computer, my only suggestion to Apple would be to modify the transfer utility that shows up on your first boot. Since it requires you to use FW. Also if they allow target disk mode with USB, that would be great to.

Just a reminder for those of you with multiple Macs on the same network; in the sharing preferences all you have to do is check DVD/CDRom Sharing (on your desktop machine) and it will appear automatically on your Air.

Since my Air is a replacement for a faulty laptop, I intend to make a fuss if I can't even watch a simple YouTube clip without it killing one of the cores off!!!

That said, everyone I know who has one has never had that issue, so I'm not too fussed

I am glad that some of you are happy with the MBA, because my experience has been nothing but bad even though the most stress I put on the unit was through YouTube, how about if I used more intensive applications (which I am not intending to do on the Air)

well youtube (flash) is a problem...apple said the high temp. is caused by the gma x3100. But i can watch a whole movie on my bed without the fan kicking in. my friend has the new macbook and it is only slightly faster...so you can stress your mb air a bit more. VM (XP), firefox and word works perfectly

I was playing with a 1.8GHz SSD MacBook Air tonight and it is so fast opening applications; faster than my 2.4GHz MacBook. Is all of that speed the SSD?

The ssd version shouldn't be that much faster if at all than your macbook 2.4. There is virtually no seek time on the ssd. However a balance of the read speed and slower clock speed on the air play out, so technically I would assume it should be around the same for opening programs. Osx caches stuff too so its hard to tell. Mr.light, yeah i took forever contemplating air vs mbp too. In fact I spent an hour and a half at the apple store opening programs and playing with the computers back and forth. What made it worse for me was the price. I have a friend in grad school as my education discount so the air was 1699 and the base model mbp was 1799. I couldn't make a decision for weeks. The trade offs and price made them both pretty much equal to me. My opinion is, if there is something you absolutely cannot live without on one of the laptops, then choose the one that has the feature you need. If you can live with either laptops, flip a coin and buy one of them cause it probably doesn't matter. Both would make a great mobile computer.

I have only managed 4:51 hrs playing movies with quicktime, no internet, no blue-tooth, dark wallpaper,in a dark place such as a bus, with air conditioning (2500 rpm all the time), and at the end I left about 8% battery life... I think 5:00 hrs can be reached only in very extreme conditions.

a little update, everything is still fine with my air, still no dead pixels and no core shut downs from flash videos, i do notice hulu and youtube make the fans ramp up but nothing out of the ordinary too much. I love it!!! hildegueden,
yeah my opinion on five hour battery life is that to get that, the computer would probably be useless for me to be able to achieve that. I need wifi on too and I like a somewhat bright screen. Eh, what im getting battery wise hasn't bugged me so its all good.
