Hey guys, do not, i repeat DO NOT follow the instructions to calibrate your battery on apple's website. It says:

# Continue to keep your computer on until it goes to sleep. Save all your work and close all applications when the battery gets very low, before the computer goes to sleep.
# Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.

Well, I did just that! I made sure to exit all applications before it went to sleep on its own. I wanted to keep watching Heroes :)) ) so I opted to turn the computer off instead of allowing it to sleep for 5 hours. So I held down the power button till it turned off. Turned it back and and it froze like a kernel panic. Turned off. Turned on. Everything hunky dory til I close her up...and the apple lights up and the drives spin. WTF! I try it again and again, change settings, repair permissions, reset pram...nuttin. So I had to go through the PITA that is resetting the power manager unit (turn off, unhook cord, take out battery, hold down power button for 5 seconds, replace everything, start up) and now I'm just fine!

It wasn't my MBPs fault per say, just Apple's dumb4$$ instructions. Just let it sleep.

If you turn off your Mac like that, you are dumb4$$ yourself. And you deserve it ;)

I always tell everyone that when doing battery calibration, you should let it sleep untill it dies. You'll insure maximum battery usage aswell. You paid alot of money for this machine so I would expect you to be extra carefull with it. :)

Just following Apple's instructions. Its a must for kernel panics and its never had lasting effects on the machine in the past.

And I am very careful with my machine, which is why I always check for the official apple word...which in this case was terrible. I did a upgrade install of OS X and everything is dandy.

Regardless, why in the world did you not properly shutdown? Is it a habit? I think that was very unintelligent of you. Apple's instructions are fine. Dont blame apple for your mistakes.

and sleep != shutdown or vice versa. They are different in how they work.

AAAAAnd again, instructions straight from Apple's mouth below

# Continue to keep your computer on until it goes to sleep. Save all your work and close all applications when the battery gets very low, before the computer goes to sleep.
# Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.

Its definately not a habit, I shut it down properly every time. However there is only one way to turn the computer off during the state it is in after it forces sleep as per Apple's instructions. It says wait til sleep and the first words of the next line are "turn off the computer" OR allow it to sleep for 5 hours or more. I don't see why they would include the part about turning off the computer if it was not a reasonable course of action that is perfectly safe to follow.

i suppose its a little misguiding, but i've never heard of anyone doing what you did. Oh well.

I guess knowledge of how sleep and shutdown work and their differences would lead you to believe otherwise.

When Apple tells you to turn off your computer, they meant you to turn it off the proper way. When they want you to turn off your computer by pressing and holding down the power button, they will say so.

Yeah, the OR there is pretty important. If it had already started to sleep. Just leave it to sleep. If you wanted to deplete the battery to zero the only way to do that is to leave it to sleep until proper dead.

When it gets so low that it is ABOUT to sleep. That's when you do the proper shut-down thing. Not hold Power button when its asleep.

Well. Time to stick my foot in my mouth.

I calibrated the battery in my new MBP. I let it run out, then let it go to sleep until the battery is completely dead, and it turns itself off. I then plugged it in, opened it up, hit the power button to wake it up from deep sleep...

And got a kernel panic.

How long will it sleep before it dies?

i'd say a few hours. Every time I calibrate while I sleep I find the computer's sleep light off when I wake up.

I guess the SRs have an issue with this. Calibrated my MBP 3 times and have not had any kernel panics. (yes i know i should be doing it more often...being that this is a week 43 MBP).:p
