My iMac 24' Temperture

Dear all, Lately I have noticed that my iMac is slower then before, and the noise from the fan is very noticeable.

I used iStat Pro to find out all the following info:

CPU:
User 6%
System 2%
Nice 0%
Idle 92%

Memory:
Wired 162MB
Active 499MB
Inactive 110MB
Free 249MB

Temps:
HD: 60C
CPU 48C
Airport 47C
Ambient 30C
GPU 58C
GPU Diode 59C
GPU Heartsink 57C
HD Bay 56C

I have done some research and other peoples' CPU temperature is btw 45-50C.
How come mine is so HIGH? so as my HD is 60C !!! OMG??
Is there any way that I can bring down the TEMP?
or anything I should work on??

what about cleaning it inside from all the dust ,and after that give the fans a bit WD40 , that might help more then anything else before you fiddle with fan controls :rolleyes:

Uh, I think don't think your temps are out of line. All your temperatures are normal. I'll admit 60C might be a bit higher than average, but in other iMacs it's around 55C, so it's not that big of a difference. Your iMac is fine as far as I am concerned. Just make regular backups (which everyone should already be doing!) and make sure you have Applecare (in case anything ever does go wrong) and you'll be fine.

60C is HD killer temp. I have mine @ 45C all the time and ~50 when using default fan speeds. Maximum operating temperature of hard drive is 55C usually

30C ambient is pretty high. How hot is your room?
 
this is what my Mac is after turning it on for 30 min,
HD 49C
CPU 45C
Airport Card 64C b/c im using wireless
Ambient 28C
GpU 55C
GPU 57C
GPU heatsink 55
HD bay 46C

what is Ambient, what is it normally? and how should i get it down?
my room isn't hot...usual room temp!

thats a good idea to clean it, but how can i m clean it from inside? buy a vacuum or a gas can to blow all the dust out?

I've actually noticed an increase in internal temperatures of my iMac since I've upgraded to SL (now 10.6.2). I am particularly worried for the HD temps that also in my case peak up to 60°-63°C without any "intensive" use (just web surfing and light pics' pp). Room temperature is not particularly hot (22°-23°C). In addition to that, also the top left corner of the alu bezel is extremely hot (iStat temps in the 80°C region after a couple of hours' uptime).

I was wondering whether all this could be related to SL/iStat problems in detecting the correct temps. Anyone else has got the same SL /temps effect?

p.s. every data of my iMac is safely backed-up on external drive :p

OP i can assure you that your HDD WILL NOT die!!

the temperatures you are seeing are quite normal! my HDD is on 58°C as we speak.

the main factor here is the ambient temperature, it is 30°C at your place. thats quite hot and the higher the temperature of the air the harder it is for the components to stay cool.

i would not worry one bit about your temperatures. my computer has been at those temperatures for pretty much 100% of the last 2 years. it is fine.

ok here's what i think after having researched it a lot way back

first, yes apple engineers aren't stupid, they made choices about form and shape and heat

but yes you might disagree with them

basically, over 50C will reduce the life of your HD and regular temps of over 60C are definitely not good

but, if you are the kind of person who upgrades your machine say every year or two, you probably dont really need to think about it too much if you are just talking mid 50s or something

but, if you like to keep your imac running for longer like three four or five years, then yes you should be thinking about your HD temps

also, there are some other exceptions, like if you game in bootcamp windows or do heavy video or other heavy work in windows your temps will get very high if you play fps all day

so basically if you are paranoid, or want your machine to laaaast, or you use windows a lot for serious work eg. fps, then you should probably think about some fan control software

in my case i use smcfancontrol and it has always worked very well for me. i have a setting for heavy work in osx and a higher setting i used for gaming in windows.

two other things. first yes dust makes a difference. you can open and clean if you are that kind of person - but even just run your finger along the grills at the bottom of the monitor part will clean out a lot of dust. second weather makes a difference. i dont know wheer you live but in my case i def have higher temps sooner in midsummer

oh two other things

backup is easy these days with timemachine and cheap usb drives so use it
and, yes the case gets hot, its meant to, its how the machine looses its heat. use istat or other temp software not your hand to judge whats happening inside

60c is usually the MAXIMUM operating temperature of the hard drive so anything over that or even close might cause issues in future. As OP already said, he is having slow downs. Of course they might be software issues or other than hard drive but 60c is IMO too hot, not in short time but in longer run, it'll kill it faster
 
My hard drive on my laptop is 100F-220F using SpeedFan, is that too hot as-well. I should point out I'm using a gateway MX6426, and its not a Mac, and you can't speed up the fans.

the max yea, but we know they can take a fair bit. of course in the long run it will eventually shave a bit chunk of time off of the life of the machine. mine has been at those heat ranges since we purchase it in 2007. the machine is never turned off and there is zero sign of any slowdowns or whatnot.

apple made the mistake of putting the HDD right in the middle of the rest of the heat making things haha! silly.

but yeap i have to agree with you in the long run, (5+ years).
