My 20" iMac G5 (2.0 GHz, 512 MB RAM (stock), AE+BT, Apple Keyboard/Mouse, HP DeskJet 5740) will not sleep! Ever.

It's very frustrating. The only nonApple add-on I have is my printer. I've tried unplugging it to no avail. I guess I could try unplugging the KB and Mouse, but I'd have to plug them back in to wake it up. My free AppleCare expires in August.

How are you connected to the net? When I started using an Ethernet connection on my iMac, I too experienced this problem until I altered the settings on the modem - apparently the regular "pings" the ISP sends were continually waking the machine!

Also, if you're not sure how to do this modem-side, then head to the Energy Saver section of System Preferences and uncheck the two Wake Options. This should have the same effect. :)

Oops... sorry. Should've listed in my first post that it won't go to sleep on its schedule.

Try zapping the PRam. Worked on mine when I had the same problem.

I will try zapping the PRAM, although considering this is a 9-month-old Mac, stuff like this shouldn't happen! :D

check out your widgets too. some of them seem to keep things going.

Any idea what widgets could cause this? I think the only 3rd-party one I have running is Gas.

Does it wake up or it never even go into that mode? if it was trying to sleep and wakes up then that would be an add on doing it.

All it does is sleep the display.

I'm still dial-up!

I don't think I have those checked, but I will check (pardon the awful pun :D).

Thanks.

You're absoloutely right, that said mine's less than 6 months and had similar symptoms. I never figured out the true problem but zapping the PRAM seemed to fix it. Coincidence perhaps but who knows :)

I tried it last night. There's a chance that I only let it restart three times instead of four, so I'm going to try it again, but the try last night didn't work. I'm pretty sure I let it sit for long enough to go to sleep, too.

Very interesting. I still have my one call to AppleCare, should I use it?

Well, I remembered that some say that Internet Sharing keeps the computer awake, so I tried turning it off and then seeing if it went to sleep. No such luck.

Any other ideas?
