My iMac is all of a sudden slow?

I have an iMac with the i7 processor and 8gb of ram. The thing usually flies, but all of a sudden it seems to be slower. The internet is slower and any program i open i get the colored ball for awhile before it opens.

maybe timemachine or a spotlight rebuild ?

Turn off and reboot?

You can check in activity monitor to see if it's doing any time machine backup or spotlight indexing.
