My imac is slow, freezing and hot!!

Hello every one

my imac is slow when i run more than one application, unlike before i didn't have this problem after my imac had it's first crash with my hard drive, i needed to replace it with a new one, so after i've replaced it to the new hard drive... i'm having some issues now:-

1_ my applications are slower than they used to be.

2_ some time my imac suddenly freezes and it deosn't work properly but the mouse is working fine but nothing else is working at all.

3_ my imac is hotter than before and i had some temperature numbers of my imac and i need to know if these number are normal or not:- (all the temp numbers are taken from my istate widget):-

HD Drive 56
CPU 57
GPU 60
GPU Diode 63
GPU heat sink 61
Ambient 26
Memory Control 53

all the degrees are celsius, hope i gave you enough information about my issue.

hope that you don't tell me that the problem from my hard drive because it have been tested and it was fine when i took it.

Those temperatures look fine. What application(s) are you trying to run?

Those temps are definedly not normal. Are you sure your not having some heavy calculations on background process ? I bet you have some program hogging your CPU at 100%. Check your activity monitor!

Those other sympoms makes me believe there is some "roque" app hogging your system to a full 100% load always. No wonder you have slow / hot machine. OS X is good for multitasking, but hey there is a limit

Checking Activity Monitor would help but that's still not a very warm iMac.

well i was only running mac ox update to update my mac after changing the HDD and i also was running itunes and safari at the same time, but don't think that these programs loads my imac cpu to 100%, my cpu was running to about 35-45% at these temp, and the fans are not over 1200 rpm but the optical fan is not even over 700 rpm...... are these normal too??? because your is fater than mine

some time when my imac is really hot i get that strange smell from my imac, like something is burning, could this be a problem with my fans????

my imac is 24 inch aluminum
2.4 ghz
3 gb ram
500 gb hdd

if any one can tell me the solution for this issue i'll be very glad from you guy's, and note that i've installed my mac osx to my new hdd so it's still new.

johto has their fans running at a higher speed then normal. I have a feeling they're using smcFanControl.

Installing OS X updates is a processor and hard drive intensive task in general with all the files and packages being updated.

I have had this happen when I replace my HDD. Its spotlight re-indexing your drive. To confirm, just click on the magnifying glass in the top right corner. It usually takes a few hours, then everything returns to normal.

my update was finished and installed about 4 hours ago and the statistics was in last few minutes , and i shut down my ima to make it rest for while after the updates, but really my imac is acting strange.

i mean right now i'm using crossover and i'm deleting a bottle and right know it took about 30 min and it still didn't finish deleting it, why it's taking too long' and i'm still waiting but it's not deleting.

Was your computer slow or freezing and hot while you were installing the update? Was Spotlight still indexing the hard drive?

my imac didn't freeze and it wasn't that slow, because i know updating my mac is a big job to do, but still my imac was hot and it's still hot right now.

and i've just installed the smcFanControl and i tried to increase the speed of the fans to drop the temperature and these are the results:-
everything was dropped but the hdd

no matter how much i increase the hdd fan speed the temperature doesn't decrease, so right now i think i have problem with my hdd fan
what do u think??

Ugh? How can it be faulty if its spining, you do see the HDD fan rpm ? Dont ramp it too much or it wears faster. Your HDD is little too warm, i dont want to exceed 50c, because my first imac HDD crashed after 6 month usage..wel l power supply was damaged too they told me, and it was hoverin 5-56c as yours!

Dunno, you have 2c more ambient temp also compared to mine. Put HDD fan at 1800, and cpu 1500 as i have. Then make sure you have had your computer "idle" ..like over the night (shutdown the display) by pressing ctrl+shift+eject to save power.

I think you still have some initial hard disk activity stuff going on like indexing. I have stuff over 320 gigs, and i had to leave it overnight to finnish. When you have your compuer "idle", check activity monitor for disk activity and cpu usage. If they are "idle", then its really idle.

i checked my activity monitor and the idle is 90-98% i hope that it's ok,
and i increased my fan speed as you told and the cpu temp has droped but my hdd didn't change at all , sill between 50-56

So, your drive had issues, and it was replaced? Or did you just reinstall. Still sounds like harddrive issues. The other thing it could be is ram.

Is your mac covered with AppleCare? If it is, you should have a utility called TechTool Deluxe (it came on the cd with your AppleCare package). Run that utility for a full system wide check and report back.

Not really, but it makes it easier to troubleshoot things.

So heres the deal, harddrives are not all the same. Obviously, the new one uses more power generating more heat. No way around that. But it sure sounds like its causing your problems. Do you have an external backup you could try to boot off of for testing?

yes i do have an external hard drive for backing up, but what do i need to boot for?

i just checked with the techtool deluxe for diagnosing and the every thing was ok except this:-

So you mean you have replaced your imac HDD by your self? Is your imac the Alu version?

Apple and apple repairs disks that are not too hot for the imac enclosure. Maybe your disk is just too hot by design for imac if you replaced it your self?

i didn't even find a screw to open my imac, how could i replace my hard drive
i took my imac to apple, and they fixed it not me

Temps are fine.

The Mac should never freeze. Sure, apps crash sometimes and you'll get the spinning wheel, but you should always be able to get back to the Finder and Force-Quit.

Have you run the Apple hardware test CD?

well now i checked it again after the formate i made and it appears every thing is fine.

but now i'm facing only 1 issue left every time i update it won't back, after finishing the download the update (from 10.5 to 10.5.5) the system log out and it freezes at the update installation, but the mouse is working but the installation toke an hour and the installation bar is still at the same position.

Dunno, thats not normal. I just installed couple days ago, clean 10.5.0 and updated it straight to 10.5.5. After it downloaded all the files, it wanted to reboot, then it logged out and installed the stuff, then it made two half reboots (two times to gray screen because its updating system files), and then it reboots normally. If yours are freezing it means you have something broken. I suspect you have faulty hardware because you are experiening these lockups so often!

If i were you, i would replace the whole imac if still under warranty
You may have bad memory, bad logic board, PSU or hdd. Or something is overheating still, but then again, if its overheating that might be because somethin is already broken. Really, dont settle for a half working Mac. Its not supposed to be that unstable.

well today i've got 1 more last thing to do, i'm gonna download the update from the apple update site and install it manually, so if that didn't work then i gonna throw or sell my imac
