I have a 3.06 Ghz iMac and it is taking 1 minute 30 seconds to start up my dad has the older 20" model and his takes 30-ish seconds to start up any idea how to speed mine up a little?

I have had it since christmas, its the 21.5" 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM and 500 GB HDD its been like this since I got it

yeah I get loads of spinning beach balls every time I open an application it will do it a little

I forgot to ask - what vintage?

My current hardware is not a good point of reference - but 90 seconds seems "too long" to boot up. However, if it's been that way from the time you acquired it, be happy there aren't other issues (yet).
I would get Tech Tool Pro 5 ASAP and run tests on memory/HD, etc before it deteriorates or goes west for good.
Back everything up before it's too late.
Good luck.

What vintage?

$99 seems a bit much for it to tell me my mac is either shagged or not?

Apple hardware test = free (google the instructions, its late over here)
Post your results.
Personally, I recommend a clean install of Snow Leopard (make sure you have a good backup solution in place beforehand).
Spending money should be a last resort.
