My iMac is only two years old, and up until a recent move has worked wonderfully. I have had no problems at all with it.

A month or so after I moved, I returned home from work to hear my computer continually making the noise (now bear with me as I try to describe it) - it is the noise you hear when a program will not open due to an error, or if you hit the wrong key etc. Sort of sounds like a thud? ** I just searched my Mac sounds and have discovered it is called FUNK. Probably the most annoying sound ever ;)

I restarted the computer, but that did not help. When any sort of typing area is presented (say to enter a password or if you're in a text program) it is as if the computer has a mind of it's own and text starts to type - random jibberish, of course but with each letter comes the sound.

You can try and delete the text all you want, but it won't help - it just keeps on typing, which prevents me, as I said, from typing as with every two letters I type the computer types 10 more in between ;)

It is really a bother, and I hope I will find some answers here :) I figure my last resort is to reformat - but I'm new to the Mac world and don't want to be rash about these things :p

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

o_O

Why didn't I think of that?!

I'm away from my computer now as I'm at work, but I will definitely try that when I get home. If it is a simple case of needing a new keyboard, that would be great :p

It appears that indeed, my keyboard is the issue. I tested it last night. Disconnected from the computer the noise ceases, but once re-connected the noise immediately started up again and text started typing like crazy o_O

I've also discovered that the noise is just the general alert sound - which I have now changed to a better one that isn't quite so annoying until I can get a new keyboard.

Thanks for your help Etherz10!
