I have an older 20" iMac, mid 06 I believe. I was getting a blinking folder and apple icon everytime I tried to boot it. Keyboard shortcuts didnt work, nor could I boot from the CD, nothing seemed to work. I ended up taking out the HD and putting it into a dock, and running the imacs CD from my MBP, and try to partition and re-install the software onto the original HD. When I got to the part of booting from the imacs cd on my MBP, I got the same flashing apple and folder icon on my MBP. Is it because I am running the imac software cd on the MBP, or is it something else? Anyone have any suggestions?

The iMac's restore disk will not work in the MBP, so that's likely your problem

So is there any way around this? I formatted the hard drive just fine, and its recognized by my MBP, but how am I going to install the OS from the iMac, onto the HD, from a different computer?

take the hdd in the dock and plug the dock into the imac boot the imac with the imac cd and try to see if it works on the hdd in the dock. BTW new hdds are not that expensive you could purchase a new one and put it in the dock partition it. Then put it in the imac and do a fresh install.

I have a extra 2tb HD here, and I formatted it. The problem is, I think I have an issue with my CD drive on my older iMac, so that is why I tried to install the OS onto the HD, via a different computer.
