First of all, I bought this from the Apple store in a mall, rather than ordering it off line. I walked into the store, feeling elated that the 4 months of research and saving were about to culminate, walked right up to a salesman and said 'I want the 2.8ghz iMac, the 24" model.' I was kinda in a hurry, so it was a bit annoying when he then launched into a 20 minute speach abouit the pro's and con's of each system... OIn the bright side, he was very knowledgeble, and did not misrepresent anything. On the down side, he would not take a hint and stop. Overall I was very happy with the shopping experience, and the salesman was the best I've every talked to.

Now, on to the actual iMac. The packing was very nice, and it was extremely easy to set up and start using. One of the first things I noticed was how nice the screen was, and how I liked the 'laptop style' keyboard. Once I got it up and running I kinda hit a 'now what' minute where there really wasnt anything to do. It was a beautiful moment.

Now that I've had it a bit under 2 weeks and have spent countless hours on it here are my favorite and least favorite things about the iMac:

1.Its beautiful. Its sleek, its small, its clean... Oh, and the 24" model is great, every time I see a 20" in the school labs it looks like a little toy, so if theres anyone on the edge, save the extra money and get the 24" I only wish it was bigger (thats what she said)

2.Spaces. I thought it was a stupid feature at first, but now I use it all the time. 1=Finder/normal tasks 2=iTunes 3=Lightroom, iPhoto, Photoshop 4=Safari

3. The gui is so nice, and makes extended usage more bearable

Cons:

1. Graphics card is underpowered. I put my applications folder in the stacks, and it drops frames like they're hot... I know stacks is not meant for a folder with so much stuff, but come on... its horrible... Lets hope the next model fixes this

2. Screen does not get dark enough. One thing I loved about my powerbook is that the screen went from very bright to very dark (to off) my iMac shows barely any change, but i hear the 20" is better with that

3. The price. I could have gotten twice this power and a bigger screen for $1,500 with a pc, and when I have the room, thats what I'll do. But for now this is the best all in one pc ever made, and I'm a proud owner.

I hope this helps anyone who wants to know more about what its like to own an iMac. These are all just my opinions, so if anyone has a problem, feel free to bring it up, but dont get mad at me, im not presenting these as facts, and we're all entitled to our opinions, right?

Somehow I clicked the wrong thread, could an admin move this to the proper section?

Welcome to Mac dude! Good pros and understandable cons. Graphic Cards always seem to be a 'problem' for users that research things. The Stacks frame skip might be the GPU, or it's just the OS trying to grab such a long list of things to display in less than a second and the combination of it all freaks it out for a second. Who knows. How does it handle Lightroom?

How does it handle Lightroom?

Very well actually... I am used to using it on my old powerbook which stuttered through everything, now its actually a pleasure to use... I have not opened up photoshop in days because of it.

for your con number 3, their is a program (forgot the mane but some one will bring it up) that allows you to adjust it to make it even darker.

Also, did you purchase the upgraded graphic card or are you using the stock one?

But it's still a PC.. yuck.

Theres nothing wrong with pc's... In many aspects I like them as much, if not more than macs. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but just completely disregarding one is stupid.

Thats what I figured was going on. This guy seemed kinda... out there... the 60's did not treat him well.

What GPU and Memory have you got? It's more likely this is a symptom of memory and hard disk paging than GPU. For example my stacks can seem to 'drop frames' as you put it when the HDD pages out/in. But when cached into memory, the stacks animations are very smooth - even on my Mac mini with GMA 950 GPU - now THAT is an underpowered GPU!!

2. Screen does not get dark enough. One thing I loved about my powerbook is that the screen went from very bright to very dark (to off) my iMac shows barely any change, but i hear the 20" is better with that
Use a program called 'Shades' - that'll help you out.

In terms of hardware, you'll be surprised how close the price is. The LCD panel in the 24" iMac is much superior compared to the bundled monitors you'll get with PC's, which will be an inferior TN Film based panel. Just one example.

In software terms, the price you pay for a Mac includes a FULL operating system and consumer software suite, iLife. A PC will have an option of a reduced functionality version of Vista (Home) or you pay a premium for the ultimate licence with a poor set of programs that doesn't come even close to iLife.
