Okay, you hit the power button on the back and it goes to the grey screen with the apple on it, then after a minute or two the apple turns into a 'no' sign. You know when signs say 'no smoking', the little circle with a line through it, then it starts humming like a vacuum cleaner and won't even let me eject the start-up disk.
 
That is really weird.

This is simple, but try it—just try unplugging your iMac, and wait 30 seconds, and replug into the power source again. You never know.

My iMac did the same thing (minus the "no" sign) to me last month, and that's what I did and it worked just fine thereafter.

If that doesn't work, try inserting a start-up disk while holding down the "C" button at the same time—see if that gets it going.

If neither of these options work, then hopefully somebody else will have a better solution.
