When I came in this morning it was acting v-e-r-y slow and Open Office would not even force quit. I poer cycled and started out fresh without much open. All was fine when I left for lunch, but when I came back it was dead. The screen was black but when I tried tow ake it nothing happened, and it sounded like the hard drive was trying to access repeatedly every few seconds. Power cycling did not help, and now it won't even chime or boot at all, just the hard drive access repeatedly. This is an original Aluminum iMac 24", so it is not quite 3 years old. Yes I have Applecare but it is going to be a pain toting it into the Apple store (we can have Macs at work but they are self supported).

Oh well I guess I will be getting a computer since this one is almost out of warranty. Probably either another iMac, mini + display, or mbp + display. I expect it will be an iMac sine if I ask for a display they will probably just give me one the company already has.
You'd ask for another Mac even though the one you had just died, and you'd have to support it yourself? Err...
Better that than Windows...Actually I have to use Windows anyway at times, but I would rather not have it as my primary OS if I can help it.
Actually maybe a mini would be better. I have the identical model iMac at home (bought it as a refurb just after getting the one at work) and its hard drive died this summer. After about 2 weeks I finally dug into it and replaced the drive (not fun).
It is not my machine, it belongs to the company I work for, and they normally replace pc's before the warranty runs out. That means that I will most likely get a new computer, even if this one does end up getting fixed (and eys you are right, it should).
EDIT: There is also the question of data security (compny confidential information and all that stuff). Since it won't boot I can't wipe the drive easily before taking it in, and I am not about to open it to take the hard drive out (I did that on my home iMac and don't want to do it again).
No I started to but since it is not my machine I thought if IT was willing to take care of it I should leave it to them. They are sending somebody out Monday to get it and take it to Apple.
I got my iMac back this morning and it is working great. Apparently they replaced the power supply and that is all. The one issue I am having (certainly nothing to do with the repair) is that syncing keeps saying there are conflicts and asking how to resolve them; I keep answering "Replace data on computer" and it keeps coming back, but I assume that when it finally finishes getting synced up it will be fine.
