My imac's GPU has failed, already!

8800 GS gave up on me last week

I do moderate gaming on bootcamp and last week, I had some problems with bootcamp so I reinstalled all the drivers. Right after, I started seeing weird screen artefacts on the screen... I thought it was a driver issue and rebooted in mac os x, still got the same problems, osx was super slow and I could occasionally see lines and spots.

One day later, it was gone. but i couldn't do any 3D intensive work or else it would start again(overheating problem maybe?)

Yesterday, it really stopped working, whenever I load up mac os x, i get a black window while booting saying to shut down the computer in a few different language. If I boot up in windows, I hear the window chime and all sounds, but nothing on the screen.

I'm ready to bring it to the store with my applecare

It's quite weird that the GPU dies after only 7-8 months, are imac's gpu affected by nvidia's faulty chips?

I don't think so, I think only the 8600 and 9600 are affected by it. Who knows though. The good thing is the GPU is on a card in the 24" model so a repair should be pretty easy; no logic board replacement. Hope everything turns out OK!

All these sad lemon stories make me think I should just buy floor models. At least I KNOW they work and have been working even when taking abuse from random customers and kids banging on the keyboard like a toy piano

Rumors were around that there was some spill over to the original G92 line. Get if fixed OP.

Except that floor models can be hideously dirty.

TO OP: I think Apple is obligated to fix your machine. They should get you sorted out.

I am a teacher and we bought 6 new iMacs last fall and already had one returned to Applecare for a dead GPU. The tech for our county that picked it up said he has seen a lot of those, so go scream at Apple.

My exact thoughts when I went through 3 santa rosa MBP's back in the day. Never gave up on apple though, only their QC.

After ONE WHOLE months, not apple's fault... The computer goes to the university's technicians first. The verdict is a dead 8800GS. I just got it back today and it seems fine, no more screen glitches and freezing!

Wrong, definitely impacts 8300 & 8400 by all the complaints from Sony owners stuck with those chips (and Sony being the only large OEM refusing to acknowledge the problem) and out of warranty.

Seems to me the entire nvidia mobile 8x00 series is suspect. I will not buy any mobile nvidia-based system period!
