my imaginative status bar...

was working on my mac tonite, and noticed my status bar (and the get info window on my HD) shows 244G available; maybe that doesn't seem like a lot in 2013, but...i only have a 256G SSD installed. and my home folder alone shows 50G used.

meanwhile, disk utility tells me i have 38 (!) gigs available.

so...somethings way off. i should have perhaps 144 gigs available.

any ideas? what might cause this, and, of course, how to fix it?
(i've already rebooted, run disk utility...)

i ran onyx, rebooted...same thing.

neither report makes sense. i cleared the crashplan cache (said it was about "200G"!), and i've never used time machine...

so...?

If Time Machine is enabled in general, it will create local snapshots. The Finder reports the space used by the local snapshots as free because they are available to be pruned as needed; Disk Utility and other tools will report the space as used.

You can disable the feature by entering the following in a Terminal window:

sudo tmutil disablelocal

You will be prompted for your password.

i've never used time machine...

so, still confused. am re-indexing spotlight, and will reboot.
but never saw this before tonite...

EDIT: ran the above in the terminal, and now my system report shows about 150G available, which sounds right (and it WAS backups that was showing the most used space).

meanwhile, the status bar now tells me i have 356G available (so over 100G more than the size of my drive)...

???

which makes the most sense. but the status bar still shows 355.89G available...

EDIT:
i'm mostly talking to myself here...

ran the terminal command (even tho i've never used TM).
reindexed spotlight.
ran onyx.

rebooted again...and all is well. finder window and about this mac both reporting same thing (150G available).

so...all is well.
