Subject: My iMP's Bluetooth Keyboard sometimes takes control away from me and does strange things

I've seen this issue in the past using an iMac 5K with a Bluetooth (BT) keyboard (KB).

The scenario is that when I'm typing away on the KB all of a sudden the text/characters being entered/echoed to the screen will not be ones I'm entering on the KB. The KB has in fact taken control or maybe the system has and entering unwanted spaces and weird text to the screen. See three screen shots I was able to grab when this happens.

So what's the problem or more exactly, is my keyboard defective in some way or is it some weird electrical interference affecting the BT transmissions or is the system getting strange requests from the KB causing this issue of unwanted text being sent to the screen ?

I've tried to remove any and all electrical influences from where the KB is situated yet the problem still happens.

If it's my body that has strong electrical properties there's not much I can do about that presumably.

I'm told that 2.4 GHz frequencies are at odds with Bluetooth; are they ? My nearby Apple TC uses 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies and its some 8 feet away from the KB.

I have two Promise Pegasus RAID5 units within 3 feet of the KB as well as two OWC Docks. Then I also have my Apple Watch on my wrist as well and surely that cannot be the cause, can it ?

At first I was prepared to live with this problem as the Space Gray KB that comes with the iMP is very nice to use and looks part of the iMP design along with its Space Gray and somewhat shiny BT MM2. The problem now is happening several times a day whereas at first it was maybe a few times each week. So, I've had to resort to using my glaring white extended USB keyboard instead and will see if the same issue as has been happening using the fancy Space Gray BT KB will also happen with this USB KB.... I doubt very much that it will.

I have discussed this with AppleCare folk and really their only advice is to take the KB in to the Apple Store for them to run diagnostics to see if a problem shows up and maybe simply replace the KB for me. Somehow I feel the KB would behave properly at the Apple Store as if it's a child not wanting to be pushed into the corner for being so naughty.

It may also be worth giving your keyboard a vigorous shake the next time it happens. It's possible there's something stuck against a contact.

OK, I'm pretty sure I have solved this problem for myself. here's what I discovered based on advice given here and talking with Apple Tech help and some reading on the matter.

After removing every thing I could that offered the prospect of interference from around and near my iMP the KB issue remained.

Then as a last resort I decided to turn off my nearby 2016 15" rMBP13,3's BT MM2 (some 2 feet from my iMP) and see if that was causing my issue.

Well after several days with the nearby 2016 15" rMBP13,3's BT MM2 turned OFF the KB issue did not happen. So for now this MM2 is turned OFF, but will in a day or two turn it back on to see if the KB issue reoccurs. I have to say, at this point I'm convince the issue is with having my 2016 15" rMBP13,3's BT MM2 nearby and turned ON.

My opinion only:
A WIRED USB3 keyboard is ALWAYS better and more reliable.

So is my BT Space Gray KB so long as my nearby MBP13,3's MM2 is off. I'll probably move my MBP13,3 a bit further away so that its MM2 does not interfere with my iMP's KB. I like no wires in my man cave environment. :):p

Wireless has come a long way and wireless is not a problem anymore.

I do use a Wired Apple keyboard though.

I'd love to get the space gray BT apple keyboard with the numpad if it ever goes on sale individually.

So, I'm very happy with my 18 core iMac pro (having had it for just under two weeks now). The only niggle is that when I power off and back on again, I lose connection to both the keyboard and mouse (both the space grey apple products shipped with the iMac Pro). Switching either off and on doesnt help, so I end up plugging in a wired keyboard to get past the log in screen and then both start working again fine. I don't normally power off so it's not a huge problem to me but it's annoying nonetheless. Would be interested if others have encountered the same?

A few years back, someone posted a solution which worked for him/her. Apparently the devices were going unresponsive for around 8 minutes. You might try this, perhaps it could work: #14

Do you constantly have multiple cell phones or other landline (usually 2.4ghz) headsets around it?

So I generally have my iphone and iPad nearby on the desk, but the strange thing is that once i’ve Logged on the mouse/keyboard work fine... it’s just that first stage before signing on...
