my Intel iMac is frustrating me!

when I wake it up, it needs a good 45-60 seconds to start working, if I click on anything, I get the beach ball and I wait, it's great after, but this is getting annoying, it's like shutting it down and turning it back down. This also happens when I leave it idle for a while then get back to it.

My PowerBook on the other hand although not faster than my iMac, springs into action when I wake it up, everything works from the first second, am I the only one experiencing this?
 
any third party apps running in the background? Maybe some PPC app that works fine on your PB but not on the iMac? Like a menu bar widget or just a widget or something,,,

I rarely use 3rd party apps, the apps in my iMac are all Apple Apps, I have this problem with iChat, iTunes, Safari, but only after waking my iMac
 
Did you use the migration assistant to copy stuff from your other mac to the intel one?

If so, bad move. Its best to just create a new user on the new machine with the same name and password as the older one, and copy your home folder to the new user.

The migration assistant copies stuff that may not be compatible or slows things down (I've seen it going from G4 to G5 by copying G5 incompatible drivers and stuff.)

Otherwise, you may try creating a new user and see if things still occur in that "clean" state. Also sometimes bad fonts can slow things down....
 
Definitely not normal. You didn't mention how much RAM you have, but even with 512mb, it shouldn't be hanging the way you describe. As suggested above, create a new account and see if you still have the same problems. Might be time for an OS re-install.

Completely normal. You have to expect stuff like that, because the parts of the computer have been out of motion for a while, and they need to warm up again. It's like saying that if you stop having sex right before you climax, and come back to it an hour later, you should get an orgasm in 10 seconds. No.. it needs warm up again.

I think that's completely normal for computers..... and also there are so many other mysteries that we aren't even aware of... little things.. like a task that's being done.. or a hangover of something.. or you know. theres so many little things. I think there isn't a problem at all.

My Intel iMac don't do that, 2 seconds at most starting up, unless my wife leaves any of the microsoft office apps open, especially Excel for some reason, then it take ages. But if she leaves photoshop, illustrator and indesign open (at the same time) no problems.

I don't think my wife knows how to quit programs, but that's another story.

I hope you were joking, because this is completely wrong. It is *not* normal for an Intel iMac to take up to 1 minute to "warm up." Even my lowly G3/400 Powerbook only takes a couple of seconds to spring back to life after sleep.

well I didn't transfer any files from my old PowerBook, I did them manually, what could the problem be? I agree it shouldn't take time to warm up because my PowerBook is ready within seconds of waking it.
 
Go to Start Up drive under Preferences and make sure it is not set to Network Drive. If it is the machine will spend a minute trying to connect (even if there is no network). HTH
 
Hi Jericho ...

This first thing to do with any sleep problem is repair permissions ...

For trouble free Sleep Operation ..
Try these energy saver settings ..
System Preferences/Energy Saver

Set the "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for" .. at "Never"
Set display sleep slider where you wish... then ...
Check "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".

This Way Everything sleeps but the CPU

I have to second that as my 20" Intel iMac doesn't do that at all. More like 2-4 seconds and it's like a rocket again, so is my GFs iBook after sleep mode. Sounds like something is off a bit :confused:
 
No problems on mine either. But.... My dad's does the exact same thing. He is always complaining about it. I told him to do a fresh install. But, he wants me to go over and do it. But, if I do and something gets messed up, I will never hear the end of it. :p I say restore that sucker...
