I have a 7 month old 17 inch intel imac that shut down by itself after 5 to 10 minutes of use. I have to wait for several hours before the system will operate again but same problem will surface. Is this a common problem? Any suggestions on how to overcome this problem?

Hoping for the best

Did that, twice. The technicians are still wandering what is wrong. I was told this is a common problem for mac books but not imacs. Luckily it is still under warranty.

Well then you probably should be in line for a replacement.

Anyway thanks for the replies. Hopefully I get some good news after X'mas. It really feels lousy having to go back to Windows while waiting for my imac to return. Happy holidays!

Wow, that's no fun. I would definitely call them everyday for an update. Sounds like you will be getting a brand new iMac or they will replace the system board.

My friend had this happen to his 24" G5 iMac. He ignored it, but eventually it wouldn't turn back on afterwards for good. May have been a power supply or logic board problem, but Apple quoted him $900 for a fix!!

Did the people at Apple told him what was the problem?
