My internet (safari/email) isn't working during a call???

Had the iphone since it came out and I am just realizing (because I never try this) that it said "Cannot use cellular data applications during call". I'm at my house now when I try this and it only gets edge network here, is this normal? Maybe I'm going crazy but I always thought the internet and internet apps works fine during a call (when not on wi-fi).....

you'll need a 3G or wifi connection for all of this to work

Internet and email work during a call only on 3G/WiFi, not EDGE.

No its not, its because voice (normally) operates on the 2G network, as does GPRS and EDGE. As such phone networks and phones can't support a voice and data connection at the same time, and as voice takes priority over data, the data connection is suspended for the duration of the voice call.

This doesn't happen with most 3G enabled phones and networks and as such a 3G device and network can have a 2G voice call and a 3G data connection at the same time.

Easiest way to compare this is to dial up and broadband. Using dial up its voice or data. With broadband it's both at the same time

I've always guessed that when 3G or wifi is on that calls and texts are handled by edge while the rest goes to data. Is that not true?

Yes that is true, calls and text are handled by the GSM network bands 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz. UMTS/HSDPA is the data service and operates on these bands 850, 1900, 2100 MHz. Hence forth allowing you to use voice and data simultaneously because of the two different networks. Little side not our friends on CDMA service have never had this luxury of multi-tasking on their network lol.

Nope. There is no EDGE network in Japan, but multitasking while on a phone call works fine.

I found this out last week too, that I can't use the internet via edge and make a voice a call. Hadn't even thought about it before
