Every morning before I walk out the door and head to work, I grabbed my iPhone that was safely in its acrylic case and snapped it into the bet buckle clip. I walked out the front door and down the street to where I parked the night before. The ground was wet from the overnight rain. I live in the city of Chicago and in some areas where the street meets the curb there tends to be up to 6 inches of standing water. Well, I went to sit in my car as I have hundreds of times before, only this time the belt clip that holds the iPhone caught on the side of the seat. It snapped, instantly sending the phone upwards, outward, and then downward into the mucky waters below.

There it sat, face down and under water.

My heart stops.

I snatched my phone up, soaking wet, as quickly as possible. It was fully submerged for only a moment or two, and to my complete relief, suffered no noticable damage. I checked the screen, speaker, and buttons and they all seem to be in working order. I have not yet had the chance to check the microphone, I will do that shortly.

Needless to say, I am very lucky.

Moral of this story:

Not only do belt clips make you look like a tool.... they can also be dangerous for your phone.

When it comes to belt clips, just say no. :D

You are very lucky! Hope your mic works though and in future takes mikahopity's advice! :p

I dread the day I drop mine :( But I know it'll happen. I got a Sidekick 3 a year or 2 ago and within a few days I dropped in on the driveway and put some huge scrapes on one corner. Then I got a Blackberry last year and within a few weeks same thing.

Total tool....

1984 just called.... they want their 'pager look' back....

Slip it in your pocket dude. Seriously.

Forget the pocket, the phone would be more accessible if it was tucked away in a fanny pack:D

Best post ever!!!!!!!!

Put the damn phone in your pocket not on your belt like a douche bag

I've heard protective cases actually scratch the phone.

Belt clips won't work. So you know what I do?

Leave it naked in my pocket. I make sure not to put keys in there with it.

I'd phamtom a guess that since the air had no where to go, the water couldn't go into the phone. Think about it, the audio jack and sim card hole are sealed.
The speaker slots at the bottom probably lead into the phone, but the air pressure kept out the water and there was no where for the air to escape out the other side. So yeah, you got lucky.

.

I go back and forth on a case. I like the cradle the Blackberry uses, but I wouldnt want a full phone case on it. Not sure I want a full body case on the iPhone either.

Right now Im using the velvet-feel pouch than came with my ipod video. iPhone fits perfectly in there.

I use the Casemate Signature Leather Case without the belt clip screwed on. I also have the Crystal film set on the screen. The whole thing fits in my front pocket very nicely. Agree...no belt clips (though I have to keep my Blackberry there...it's too large for a pocket).

I do feel bad the the OP though (especially with everyone breaking his chops). Glad the iPhone is working OK!

Yes, I agree, belt clips are terrible...

but...

I wear tight jeans and it is most uncomfortable to have the phone shoved in my pocket. My phone is usually clipped and hidden under a light jacket to avoid the deaded "clip look".

lol... tight jeans...

You just made it worse, dude.

You got a members only jacket too? ;)

Just givin you s*&t, bro...

Congrats on the quick save... Mine wasn't so lucky when it had contact with water.

You might want to give that phone a few days to dry out. I've saved a few phones that way. I had a Motorolla that seemed to work, but when I went to charge it, I fried the charging circuit.

Good to hear the phone still works. I just recently dropped mine into a cup of water (which was in the cup holder of my car). I let it dry out and it works great.

Side note: I could be wrong but it sounds as if you parked your car illegally since your drivers side door was against the curb. Moral of this story PRACTICE LEGAL PARKING!! LOL

I know this sounds strange but it does work. Put an electronic device that was exposed to water in a tupperware container with as many of those silica gel packets as you can get your hands on. I sometimes come across very large packets in machine packaging. My niece dropped her 3 day old razr into the ( I can't even type it) the back and battery popped off, we retrieved the pieces, put them all in the container, did not touch it for 3 days, it worked perfectly, and still is.

I'm suprised you didn't turn that thing off as quickly as possible and let the thing dry out for a day or so. I've had so many friends with other phones that get soaked with rain or dropped in water and then they start using them right away. Almost everytime the phone gets so screwed up/unusable that they just give up and think it's broken. They then try their phone a couple of days later after it dried out and our suprised the thing works.

That's the one I got as well, am really happy with it. I liked that it came with the film for the screen to protect it. Skipped the belt clip, would be nice if they made one without the screw-in post for the clip. Nice thing about this case is it is fairly ridgid so really gives some great protection to the phone. Nice leather too... "Napaaaahh" leather like my car seats :D
