Not to be a buzz kill but I'm pretty sure that just means it will check if there is an update on the first if you don't do it manually before then.

Generally speaking iTunes will check for updates to the IOS software every 7 days or so.

It will auto check every few days. Nothing special about what you are seeing. Don't believe me? Plug in your iPhone or iPod.
